Only as good as the competition?

Any potential playoff team who see's the likes of New York or Anaheim on their schedule may frighten them. Well not the Chicago White Sox, their fear comes from the bottom dwellers, teams in sole possession of a guaranteed losing season by mid-may.

The Chicago White Sox are back to the same place they were a week ago. Sitting three games behind the Detroit Tigers and battling for the division and a chance at the playoffs for a second year in a row. Prior to the opening game Friday night against the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field, White Sox fans were buzzing that this weekend was going to propel them into first place.

This was coming off the heels of a great 5-2 record to begin the homestand against the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. After playing great against the two teams with the best records in the American League and coming within two games of first place, the Sox sights were set on beating the lowly Indians. This proved to be a tougher test than once thought, as the Sox came within one big 5th inning Saturday night from being swept right out of their home staduim. The devestaing weekend collapse to the tribe, coupled with Detroit's series win over the Minnesota Twins now has the Sox sitting three games out of first with a very favorable schedule coming up depending on how one looks at things.

The Sox next twelve games come against the Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles. As the Sox showed baseball last week, they show up for the big games but then play down for the lesser opponents. These next two weeks will be big for Chicago as they try to make or keep ground on the AL Central race against the cellars of every division in the American League.

The only question is can the Sox perform up to their standards and come up with big wins against the teams they should be beating. Or will they have to ride it out until the end of August when they go to Boston and New York before they decide to start playing great baseball again. I guess only time will tell if the Sox can make it back to postseason play and we will find out tonight in Seattle if they take that leap forward.

He gone!!!!
