It's happened in hockey. Its happening in baseball. Its happening in St. Louis.
What am I talking about? The resergence of the St. Louis Blues in the NHL, making the playoffs after a 5 year hiatus. The St. Louis Cardinals leading the NL Central, looking to nail down a playoff birth. Now what else is missing? Oh yes the football team, the St. Louis Rams, coming off an 2-14 season and looking to join the party.
The Rams have gone through a complete makeover in an effort to be relevant in the city of St. Louis again. They have gotten rid of two Pro Bowl talents in WR Torry Holt (Jacksonville) and Orlando Pace (Chicago) in an effort to cut costs and become younger at those respective positions.
Other big additions have been a new coach in Steve Spagnuolo, ex defenisve coordinator of the NY Giants, 2nd overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft OT Jason Smith from Baylor to be the heir apparent to Pace, and other younger players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball such as center Jason Brown, formely of the Ravens and strong safety James Butler of the Giants.
However, the questions for all the new faces remain the same. Can they produce and turn around a team which desperately wants to get back on the winning track? And will injuries derail the cohesion of a group that has all these new players.
Unfourtunately the latter has already occured. Last year rookie standout at WR Donnie Avery is out 4 – 6 weeks with a foot injury. Definitely not a good start. Injuries killed this team a year ago and although unpredictable, the good teams in this league are able to have their stars stay healthy for the long season they go through.
Although not the best news, the off-season overall has been a success. At virtually every position the Rams have added younger talent, which will make the team more competitive. Playing in the NFC West will help as well, as there are no real dominate teams as in other divisions.
Rams fans hope they will be able to cheer on their team to victory more than 2 times they did all of last season. The city of St.Louis needs it.
