The Chargers were seen working in the much talked about “wildcat” formation this week in practice. Does that mean we will be seeing L.T. taking snaps with Darren Sproles on his side and Rivers lining up in the slot? Not very likely says head coach Norv Turner. The apparent reason for the wildcat practice is to prepare the defense for the upcoming season. The Chargers will open the season versus Oakland and RB Darren McFadden, who ran the “Wildhog” to perfection in his college days at Arkansas. In week 3 the Dolphins come into town with their gimmick offense as well. So it seems like the Bolts are simply getting ready for the first few games of the season. The Chargers scored the second most points in the league last year without resorting to direct snaps to L.T. It seems like Turner is going by the motto “If it ain't broke, don't fix it”. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if at some point L.T. or Sproles took direct snaps this year.
In other news, starting safety Eric Weddle returned to practice on Tuesday after missing a few days due to a collision with teammate Quentin Jammer. Starting receiver Chris Chambers drew the praise of Norv Turner for his performance in camp so far. Chambers has apparently shed a few pounds from last year and is in great shape. Chambers had an up and down season that was affected by injuries last year. The coaching staff is expecting him to have a big year in 2009.
The Bolts will kickoff their preseason action against the Seahawks this Saturday. It remains to be seen how much the starters will play. L.T. has expressed his desire to play some in the preseason, something that hasn't happened in many years. Coach Turner has already expressed that he does not want to overplay his veterans. Expect some of the veterans to play this Saturday, but probably not even into the 2nd quarter. Turner has said he wants to make sure he gets his younger players on the field to see if they have picked up on what they've been doing in practice or not. The roster has to be trimmed before September and preseason games are the place to experiment with unproven players. Expect Turner to anounce his starters on saturday.
