The Ravens opened the preseason by showing their continued tradition of great defense and serving up a Krispy Kreme doughnut to the Washington Redskins with a 23-0 victory.
Greg Mattison's Organized Chaos (“OC”) defense only allowed one drive over 22 yards while Cam Cameron's offense was equally productive. Here are some highlights:
The quarterbacks were throwing dimes all night. In his only two drives, Joe Flacco went 9 for 15 with 103 yards and led the Ravens to two field goals. The backup qb's, Jon Beck and Troy Smith contributed with a combined 19 for 39 with 305 yards.
Despite a depleted receiving unit, the Ravens were able to spread the ball around to the running backs and receivers. Justin Harper and Jayson Foster led the Ravens with a combined total of 135 yards. Harper had a case of hot potato but managed to score a touchdown with a 19 yd reception in the second quarter.
The kicking competition officially got started between Steven Hauschka and Graham Gano. Hauschka seems to be winning the battle with 21-yd and 39-yd FG's, an opening kickoff in the endzone and two that pinned the Redskins at the 2yd line. Gano hit a 39-yd FG in the third quarter but missed a 28-yd FG as a direct result of a high snap as time expired in the 4th quarter.
Key injuries: S Hakuri Nakamura with a stinger and another blow to the receiving unit with Marcus Smith on crutches following a knee injury.
500 yards of offense for Cam Cameron and a shutout for Greg Mattison gave the Ravens a great start to the season. Mattison received the game ball but you can bet he is looking forward to facing the New York Jets and Rex Ryan on Monday Night Football on Aug. 24th.
