Saturday night at 8pm in Kansas City the Texans finally get to see people in different colored jerseys lined up across from them.
The game plan for this Saturday’s game against the Chiefs is in place, at least as far how long each level of the depth chart will play.
Head Coach Gary Kubiak said after practice Thursday that the first team players will be on the field for twelve to fifteen plays. The second team will play the second and third quarters and the third team will play the fourth quarter.
Coach Kubiak said some adjustments to this will be made, especially for young players filling in for injured starters. Kubiak said linebackers Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi will probably get in somewhere between twenty and twenty-five plays.
He said, “They're first group players, but they're very young, they need more time, so they will play a little bit.”
At cornerback, the most depleted position on the team right now, Kubiak said Fred Bennett will start alongside rookie sixth round pick Brice McCain. Glover Quin will rotate with McCain for the first and second quarters. Quin has shown strong play this week in practice, really showing off his speed and ball-hawking ability.
Matt Schaub is the unquestioned starter at quarterback, so the only competition at that position is for the back-up job. Kubiak, referring to the preseason, said that “As a back-up, this is your season.” According to Kubiak, Dan Orlovsky will play with the second team in the second and third quarters. Rex Grossman will lead the third team in the fourth quarter.
Kubiack praised Grossman for how quickly he is picking up the offense. The Texans run a West Coast-style offense that is much different than what he ran in Chicago.
Grossman said, “There's a lot of things we didn't do in Chicago that we do here that I think will help me as a quarterback, so I'm looking forward to going out and doing that on Saturday.”
Along with the previously mentioned injuries, rookie running back Arian Foster will miss Saturday’s game because of a strained hamstring.
Rookie tight end James Casey summed it up best in his “Rookie Diary” on the team’s website. He wrote, “We've been sitting out here hitting each other for a long time, but I want to go out there and hit somebody else.”
You and every other Texan Mr. Casey.
