Preseason: Colts vs Vikings + Thoughts

A very brief look at what was an uneventful first pre-season game against the Vikings.

The NFL preseason is off to a roaring start. An exception to this rule apparently was the preseason game between the Colts and the Vikings which was somewhat of a snoozer at 13-3 for Minnesota. Lucas Oil Stadium did not get a fitting opening as the Colts’ offence was virtually non-existant throughout the game and the offensive line allowed the defensive line of the Vikings to get to Peyton Manning three times. The receiving corps of the Colts was without starter Anthony Gonzalez, Peyton Manning only attempted two passes, Reggie Wayne basically just went out for a little jog through a few routes and the passing game only combined for just over 100 yards.

The running game was more notable on this evening for a few reasons. Rookie Donald Brown was impressive in his blue and white debut. Brown ran for 58 yards on 5 carries which included an impressive 38 yard run. Brown definitely showed that he is capable of breaking some great long runs this year and he should factor into the Colts offense in a big way this season. Joseph Addai made two runs on the day for 13 yards. Combined these two running backs will look to improve upon what was a league worst running game last season. If there is one lesson that we learned from last year, it is that Joseph Addai will never be a 30 carry running back and the Colts will do well to have a committee of Brown and Addai running the show in a similar way to the way the Colts had Addai and Rhodes when they won the Super Bowl.

This preseason game did not do much to showcase what will be the Colts starting rotation next season. In the coming weeks we should expect to see Peyton Manning get worked into taking more reps in games and we should see Wayne, Gonzalez and Dallas Clark return to the lineup for more extended reps and drives.

In other news, the coaching staff has rounded back into shape with the returns of Tom Moore as offensive coordinator and Howard Mudd as offensive line coach. Both of these men have been pivotal in the shaping of the Colts consistent offence over the years and should be able to help the offence return back to form from last season. With plenty of young linemen getting experience last year, the running game should be able to be re-established this season.

There is not much to report once again from what is usually a quiet off-season in Indianapolis. I will continue to update as news breaks and we should all hope that pre-season will become more exciting and involved for the Colts as we gear up for the opening of what looks to be an exciting regular season.
