Preseason action has gone underway and the 49ers fans were very happy to be able to see their team take the home field as they hosted the Denver Broncos for some preseason action. There were some crucial battles to keep in mind, mainly the 49ers QB battle.
Shaun Hill got the start for the 49ers and didn't play much. Hill only played very limited time and did complete his only two pass attempts for 41 yards. He also rushed nine yards for a first down. Alex Smith relieved him and threw a touchdown pass as he played a few series. It appears Damon Huard wants to get in on the battle as well, as he threw a touchdown pass of his own, which was a 40 yarder to Britt Miller, who caught a touchdown in the second quarter from Alex Smith.
What was most impressive was the starters from the Niners' defense. The D picked off Denver QB Kyle Orton three times. It appears the Broncos have some QB issues of their own to sort out as Orton struggled. Backup Chris Simms didn't help Orton's situation either as he tossed two touchdown passes and completed 65% of his passes. Runningback Frank Gore didn't play but rookie Glen Coffee got his first action as a 49er and picked up a convincing 67 yards on 17 attempts.
It appears the 49ers starters in the secondary meshed well together as top corners Dre Bly and Nate Clements each picked off Orton on their respective sides of the field. Bly played well for the time he was out there against his former team and he may have gas left in the tank afterall. I must say though, he and Huard looked very good. I wouldn't be surprised if Huard was handed the starting spot come the start of the season if he keeps this up. Then again, Hill didn't see much action and needs to get more playing time in my opinion so the team can see if he can be their guy come opening day. Signs do point to him being the starter of Alex Smith and Damon Huard. No matter what the result of that, the game resulted in a 17-16 edge win for the 49ers as they go 1-0 on the preseason.
