‘Hawks Gain An Edge (Updated)

The Seahawks made two announcements Monday that is sure to have a significant impact on their roster in both a negative and positive way over the next couple of weeks.
The Seahawks agreed to terms with free agent running back Edgerrin James on a one year, $2 milliondeal on Monday. The addition of James could bring some change to the team's depth chart. Undrafted rookie running back Devin Moore, who has showed flashes of promise in camp and the first two preseason games, is now a near certainty to not make the team. However, Moore could have some company in the form of last year's big free agent acquisition, T.J. Duckett. Duckett has failed to produce since signing a five-year deal last season and might be too expensive to keep on the roster as the team tries to bolster what has been a rather mundane running game since the release of Shaun Alexander. Then there's the impact James would have on projected starter Julius Jones. Jones missed Saturday's game with a leg injury and the immediacy of the signing of the four-time Pro Bowler James, who has been chomping at the bit for a shot at some playing time, has to make you wonder if Jones' injury is a bit more severe than the team has lead on. At 31, James is hardly the feature back he once was, but he's a hard nosed runner with solid hands coming out of the backfield and his presence could mean a time-share situation when Jones recovers from his injury.
Speaking of injury, the Seahawks were dealt another blow to their already decimated offensive line. Center Chris Spencer left Saturday's game with a thigh injury and an MRI on Sunday revealed that the former first round pick has a tear in his left thigh muscle. The team did not give a timetable as to how long Spencer will be out but it is believed that he will miss at least the first couple games of the regular season. The loss of Spencer, along with the uncertainty over Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones' surgically repaired left knee and the retirement of left guard Mike Wahle, means the Seahawks will open the season with three new starters on the offensive line. Spencer is expected to be replaced by either journeyman Steve Vallos or second round pick Max Unger. Jones has been replaced by right tackle Sean Locklear, who was beat for two sacks and flagged a couple times for penalties against the Broncos on Saturday. The team is hopeful after their reevaluation of Jones in 10 days that the future Hall of Famer will be ready for the opener, but that could be wishful thinking.
(Update…8/25/2009: The Seahawks have, indeed, released T.J. Duckett, according to ProFootballTalk)
