Rex Ryan and his New York Jets marched to town on Monday Night Football to take on his former Ravens. Despite making the score, the Raven beat the Jets 24-23.
The Ravens “D” pounced on Ryan’s squad with a score in the first minute of play. LB Ray Lewis welcomed rookie Mark Sanchez to league with a hit to the stomach as Sanchez forced a pass that was intercepted by DL Haloti Ngata. Ngata did his best Usain Bolt impersonation and thundered to end-zone. Welcome to the NFL, Sanchez!
The defense shined with two interceptions for TD’s, two forced fumbles and a sack. Not bad for a preseason. The youngsters, rookie Paul Kruger and second year-pro Jameel McClain made noise on defense combining for 13 solo tackles, with McClain leading the team with 8. McClain showcased his prowess with an interception returned for a 14-yd TD.
On the other side of the ball, QB Joe Flacco was able to spread the ball around to 6 different receivers, although his accuracy was a little suspect at times. Flacco went 8 for 18 with 120 yards with no interceptions.
WRs Derrick Mason and Justin Harper proved to be good tandem going for a combined 130 yards. Mason was the recipient of a 43-yd dime which led the Ravens to a 3-yd TD run by rookie RB Ray Rice.
Rice and fellow RB Willis McGahee combined for 16 carries and 52 yards.
The kicking competition looks to be decided. Steven Hauschka is the clear leader with a 42-yd field goal while Graham Gano went Florida State wide right on a 46-yd attempt.
Clipped wing alert: TE L.J. Smith went out in the fourth quarter with a hurt hammy.
