Sanchez proving he's for real as he leads Gang Green to victory in the Battle of New York
However you feel about him, you have to admit one thing: The kid has poise.
Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 149 yards and a touchdown in his most extensive action to date against a tough Giants defense, helping the Jets to a 27-25 preseason victory of the team they share their stadium with. The former USC Trojan made a statement by avoiding two Giant defenders and flicking a 31 yard pass to Chansi Stuckey that resulted in a score. After the game, several Giants expressed admiration for how the neophyte handled himself.
The Jets defense also showed up, sacking Giants quarterbacks three times and intercepting them once.
There has been much conjecture about the state of the Jets' receiving corps since Laveranues Coles was allowed to bolt to Cincinnati via free agency. However, the young receivers have been showing that they may have the area covered. Second year man Stuckey led the team with four catches last night and newcomer Aundre Allison hauled in a long 70 yard bomb from third string quarterback Erik Ainge. though he didn't register anything last night, David Clowney has been having an outstanding preseason.
With Shonn Greene out until the season with a rib injury, the running game was a little thin last night. Thomas Jones managed only 16 yards on 12 carries (though he did score a one yard touchdown). Leon Washington led the group with 62 yards.
The team appears set with Sanchez at quarterback. It's hard to believe there was initially a controversy as Kellen Clemns has not played wellduring the competition. He may have to hold off Ainge for the backup spot.
The Jets conclude their preseason schedule next week with a tilt against Philadelphia. Expect very little to be learned there as the last preseason game is usually played by roster bubble players.
However, the learning continues for Sanchez…and something tells me he'll be just fine.
