Skins Lose by 3 but What an Improvement

The Redskins' Defense took the field on Friday night and forced the Patriot's to punt after only getting a few yards. The Redskins' Offense then took the field and immediately there was something different. A few long passes completed (Campbell went 4 for 4) to Moss, Kelly and Randel El, a double-pass interference call against the Patriots and then a running TD to take the lead by Marcus Mason. It was 7-0 Redskins in a few minutes.
However, this lead didn't last long. The Patriots fired right back with a TD pass to Randy Moss. The Redskins offense then took a nap for the next few possessions into the 2nd quarter while the Patriots put up more points with Brady-Moss combo taking it to a 14-7 lead, then a field goal to increase the lead to 17-7.
Since the first drive by the Redskins, there was not one single first down and the first half was ticking away. Stats were being plastered all over the screen: First Drive by Redskins 69 yards, 1 TD. Next 3 drives, 10 yards, 0 first downs. How do the Redskins do the next drive? QB Jason Campbell throws to WR Santana Moss for a first down then the next throw is long to a wide open Chris Cooley who runs all the way down to the 6 yard line (73 yards). It gets to 3rd and goal and Jason Campbell scrambles, sees no one open, and runs it in, untouched, into the end zone for a TD. It's now 17-14 Patriots.
With less than 1 and a half minutes left in the first half, the Redskins have all their timeouts and pretty good field position. They get all the way down to the 8 yard line when QB Jason Campbell is pummeled in the chest, but still manages to keep playing, but have to settle for a field goal and a tie score into the half.
Another great play to mention in the 2nd quarter was a big hit on Brady by Haynesworth. As Brady was seen sitting on the bench, he was showing signs of a hurt shoulder. It's been reported that it's not serious, but Brady did not return in the 3rd. Nice job Albert!
1st half stats – After the last 2 preseason games, these should shock anyone. Especially with how well Brady-Moss were connecting.
QB Jason Campbell did play again in the 3rd quarter but was replaced by Colt Brennan. The offense did see more good plays by Devon Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and Marcus Mason and the defense managed an interception, but that was all taken away when Colt Brennan threw an interception within yards of the end zone and it was run 100 yards the other way for a Patriots' TD. 24-17 Patriots.
The look on Colt Brennan's face said it all. He is rumoured to be dating Jessica Simpson and is fighting for the 3rd QB position (Jim Zorn made it clear that Todd Collins will be the #2 and would not be playing). Is the Simpson curse true? It appeared to be so, until a long pass by Brennan to Rookie WR Marko Mitchell for a TD. The look of relief on his face was priceless. The Redskins were tied at 24-24 with 1 quarter to go.
The Redskins did manage 1 other scoring opportunity but it was a long 52 yard field goal attempt by Suishman which was missed. The defense did its job by keeping the Patriots out of the end zone, but not from field goal range. Patriot's took the game with a field goal with seconds remaining. 27-24 Patriots.
The Redskins meet the Jacksonville Jaguars this Thursday at 7:30 PM for their last preseason game.
