Preseason finale results in Gang Green victory
Obviously, one shouldn't put too much stock in anyone based on their performance in the fourth (and usually poorly staffed) preseason game. Howver, David Clowney may just be able to carry his mojo over into the season.
Clowney scored a long touchdown for the third time this August as he helped lead the Jets to a win over Michael Vick and the Eagles, 38-27. He was having similar success last August when he broke his collarbone and was lost for the year. He brings an element of speed that the Jets receiving corps has been sorely lacking and could be a strong contender for the other starting position opposite Jerricho Cotchery.
Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has been gaining more confidence with every game and put on a clinic, completing all five passes and tossing a 21 yard strike to Cotchery. He may take his lumps this season, but, for right now, he certainly looks like the real deal.
The regular running backs (Thomas Jones and Leon Washington) basically got the night off as unheralded Danny Woodhead gained 158 yards on 18 carries. However, don't expect to see his name on the roster on Opening Day as the backfield situation is set with rookie Shonn Greene set to join Jones and Washington.
The Jets defense harassed Vick during his stint, sacking him four times. However, the fans let him have it even more, booing him whenever he stepped on the field and holding up signs that proclaimed “Vick's an Eagle…Hide your beagle!” The former felon looked tentative and unsure of himself (though he did partially redeem himself with a two yard rushing score.)
The season opener on April 13 beckons and the spotlight will be on Sanchez and company for real. That's when we'll find out just how much they all learned this long summer.
