Your head Coach, Wade Phillips, starting at quarterback, number 9, Tony Romo. Well Cowboy Nation, welcome back. The regular season starts this Sunday, September 13, 2009 with the Dallas Cowboys heading to Tampa to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Game time is 1300 EST. Dallas has won the last two meetings between these two teams and over-all Dallas leads Tampa 9-3 over their history.
The NFC East certainly got a lot better this off-season which will play a huge test for the Cowboys who did very little this off-season as far as acquiring players and making themselves a better football club. Where the Cowboys hopefully got better was in the maturity factor. We hope that Romo has matured with minimal distractions this season off the field and everybody will focus on what Romo does on the field which this blogger hopes is all positive. We also hope that the departure of WR Terrell Owens and Adam ‘whatever your name is’ Jones makes it easier for the Cowboys to play football and not worry about what is going on when the team is not on the field. Just these three departures should mean a more positive Cowboy team and one that can focus on playing football and winning football games.
The key to Dallas winning football games this season, especially in the tough NFC east is going to be there ground game. Dallas mark my word is going to have one of the best if not the best running games in the NFL this season. This will be lead by Marion Barber III, Felix “I hope to make some highlight reels” Jones and Tashard Choice. With such a powerhouse running game, the Cowboys can keep other offences off the field and score some points. Question mark might be the Dallas passing game. Can WR Roy Williams put up Owens like numbers? Miles Austin, Patrick Crayton and rookie Kevin Ogletree put some big plays on the board for this years Cowboys squad? This will remain a question until we get into weeks 2-3-4 but we can’t forget Cowboy TE, Jason Witten my favourite whom Romo can always check on for a downfield pitch and run or a nice bullet right down the middle for a “first down Cowboys”. The Dallas offensive line should help in making holes for the ground game or giving Romo that extra second to find an open receiver. Jason Garrett the Dallas assistant Coach and offensive coordinator will have his work cut out for him to move the football and put points on the board for the Cowboys but when have putting points on the board ever been a problem for this storied franchise?.
The Dallas defensive line will certainly help in keeping the Dallas offence ON the field and they are big and I mean big. The linebackers are fast, agile and will assist the defensive line in getting some turnovers and getting the offence back on the field ASAP.
I have to comment on the video board as we know it will come up once the Cowboys play their first home game at new Cowboy stadium. I look for you readers to comment here please. What will happen when the ball hits the board?, re-punt?, well that is a suggestion but I would hate for players to get injured as any football fan knows the punt and punt return is one of the fastest parts of a football game with the players going at full-speed. I don’t have an answer but am looking for any suggestions you readers may have on the ball hitting the video board. “anyone”?????. Dallas will be at home for their first home game on September 20 for the night game where we know millions will be watching to not only see the Dallas Cowboys but their new bright lights, build it big new stadium.
Call me silly but I am not a fan of Tampa QB Byron Leftwich who Tampa thinks is going to be there starter this season. He has never been a winner and is now on the last legs of his career. He had a small stint in Atlanta and was shoed away by them along with Pittsburgh. He clearly can’t even hold a football and this alone will mean turnovers for the Bucs and a Dallas victory on opening day this Sunday. I do like the Bucs acquisition of Kellen Winslow Jr. who I have always been a fan of but let’s see if Leftwich can get him the ball. The Bucs did have quite the overhaul this season but read the Tampa blog if you at all care about the Bucs. I personally do not, sorry Tampa….
Look for this to be an excellent game. Dallas of course will win with a huge time of possession advantage and get this new season off to a good start with a 1-0 record as my buddy Jimmy Buffet says “Come Monday”.
As noted, Dallas will play their home opener September 20 at home against the New York ‘football’ Giants. Life will not be easy for the Cowboys this year but will all cylinders running and the Boys staying healthy, they will compete with the best of them and work their way into the playoffs and we know anything can happen once the playoffs begin but that is a long way away.
Stay tuned, come back often and Go Cowboys….
