Texans – Jets Preview

For the Houston Texans, on Sunday afternoon, the real, big-boy football season starts.

I get excited just typing those words.

Let's do it again…football season starts.  Whoo that feels good.

Anyway, on Sunday the New York Jets come to Houston for the first regular season game of the year.  And I think the Texans should chalk up a pretty easy victory.  Let's take a look at why:

Take the express and meet me at the quarterback:  Rookie QB Mark Sanchez has been named the starter for the Jets and he better get ready to get familiar with Mr. Williams, Mr. Smith, Mr. Barwin, and the turf at Reliant Stadium.  A rookie QB, starting his first game in the NFL, on the road, is a dream scenario for any team, but especially for a team with the pass rushers Houston has.

Offense in 1-D:  The Jets offense is of the one-dimensional running variety.  They have a decent three-headed attack with Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, and if you've done your fantasy homework you'd know this name, Shonn Greene.  They have a very good O-Line.  They could present some problems because the Texans run defense is not great.  The good thing is the Texans pass defense, between their pass rush and the return of Dunta Robinson, is very good and the Jets pass offense stinks.  Their starting receivers are something called Jericho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey, who sound more like Pokemon than people (Chansi-Chu, I choose you!).  Their biggest threat to catch a pass is probably TE Dustin Keller, or Leon Washington.  Because the Jets have no passing game, the Texans will be able to load the box, stop the run, and pin their ears back on what should be some frequent 3rd and longs.

On offense the Texans will have no trouble moving the ball.  QB Matt Schaub has been practicing and he says he is ready to go.  No. 2 WR Kevin Walter is probably going to be out for this game, so the Jets better prepare to get heavy doses of Andre and Andre.  That would be Andre Davis and all-world receiver Andre Johnson.  The Jet brought in some big name defensive free agents in the off-season, as well as defensive minded head coach Rex Ryan.  The Jets had the seventh ranked run defense in the league last year, but might need some time to grow into Ryan's new system.  While they get used to the system the Texans should be able to air the ball out, use the pass to loosen up the run, and impose their will on offense.

I expect the Texans to win, and win big.

Notes:  CB Dunta Robinson and LB Brian Cushing are back and practicing…Both players look like they have not missed a beat…QB Rex Grossman has worked his way to the no. 2 spot behind Schaub.
