Rex Ryan Does It to Houston Again

Mark Sanchez was impressive in his pro debut, but the best performance came from Rex Ryan and the Jets defense, as they beat the Texans 24-7.

Last year the Baltimore Ravens came to Reliant Stadium and smoked the Texans by a score of 41-13.  The defensive coordinator for the Ravens at that time was Rex Ryan.  Yesterday the Jets came to Reliant Stadium and stymied the Texans' high-flying, 3rd ranked offense.  And who was on the sidelines for the Jets?  Rex Ryan.

Ryan likes to call his defensive scheme “organized chaos” and that is exactly what Houston saw.  The Jets were flying around making plays and Houston could not get anything started.  Steve Slaton was bottled up and the Texans' running game was stagnant for the entire game.  Andre Johnson was essentially man-covered by Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis and held to only 4 catches.  The passing game was slowed because no. 2 WR Kevin Walter was out and no. 3 Andre Davis suffered a concussion in the game, but that isn't an excuse.  The offense put up only 183 total yards, after averaging almost 300 yards more than that per game last year.

On defense the Texans did some things well, but couldn't finish.  They pressured Sanchez constantly, but couldn't get a sack.  They had two potential interceptions literally fall right through their hands.  The Texans lone touchdown was scored by the defense and that play was almost messed up.  John Busing intercepted a Sanchez pass in the fourth quarter but during the return he fumbled.  Dominique Barber recovered the fumble and went the rest of the way for the touchdown.  Because the Texans didn't get these almost-sacks and almost-picks, they kept giving the Jets chances.  Eventually this paid off for New York and Sanchez was able to carve up the defense with his arm for most of the game and Thomas Jones was able to run all over them late.

The Texans need to get into the film room and onto the practice field to figure out what went wrong and how they can fix it.  Next week they go to Tennessee and if they play no better than they did this week then they will be in for a long afternoon, and a long season.
