News and Notes From The Nest

After a dominant performance against St. Louis in their regular season opener on Sunday, the Seahawks were back at it this week in preparation for another division opponent, as the team goes on the road to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Here are some tidbits from this week's practices:

* The Seahawks welcomed back linebacker D.D. Lewis, whom the team let go a few weeks ago during final roster cuts. Lewis was signed to add depth to a line-backing core that will be without outside linebacker Leroy Hill for the next eight weeks as he nurses a groin injury. Hill left Sunday's game in the first quarter with what was initially thought to be a strain in his groin. However, after further tests, it appears the fifth-year man out of Clemson has a partial tear that may require surgery. In the meantime, backup Will Herring will be filling in for Hill and Lewis will assume Herring's duties on special teams.

* In more positive news, All-Pro left tackle Walter Jones returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing a clean-out procedure on his surgically repaired left knee. Jones was limited in practice and could return to the starting lineup as early as this Sunday against San Francisco. However, the offensive line played strong last week even without Jones and fellow starter Charles Spencer. The make-shift line didn't allow a sack against St. Louis and opened holes that allowed Julius Jones to be one of only five running backs to eclipse the century mark in Week 1. “Walt just has to tell us he's ready to go” coach Jim Mora said, “No one knows his body as well as he does. We'll let him tell us when he's ready to go. He'll make the right decision.”. In the meantime, right tackle Sean Locklear will continue to fill in for Jones and journeyman Steve Vallos will remain at center in place of Spencer, whose return is much further away than Jones'.

*As for other injury news, wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh(back spasms) and middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu(hamstring) have yet to practice this week and it's not yet known whether their absence is a precautionary matter or something more serious. Houshmanzadeh is not listed on the team's injury report, whereas Tatupu is listed as questionable for Sunday's game. Also listed as questionable are wide receiver Deion Branch and cornerback Travis Fisher, who are both nursing injuries. Both Branch and Fisher were limited in practice on Thursday.

We'll keep you updated on these tidbits as well as all  other Seahawks news in tomorrow's Week 2 preview.
