Marred by Mistakes, Ravens Suffer First Loss

While the cornbread recipe is a success in the kitchen, the Raven couldn't quite rise to the occasion on Sunday versus the Patriots as they lost 21-27.

The Ravens opened the game with a kickoff return that resulted in a Chris Carr fumble.  They were able to hold the Pats to a Stephen Gostkowski field goal, but this would set the tone for the rest of the game as mistakes would start to mount.

In the following possession Joe Flacco marched the Ravens offense down the field with a 15 play, 81-yard drive and asked the soldout stadium, “Who's gon' check me boo?”  Flacco may have not uttered or actually said those words but his fist pump and cheer after WR Desmond Mason did his best gymnastics floor exercise TD catch reflected those exact words.  Mason managed a 10 on execution but the Russian judge docked him for the legs not being together and forgetting to point those toes.

Offensively, CC (Cam Cameron) thought it was “Air Mail” day in Foxboro with Flacco logging frequent flier miles with a career high 47 pass attempts.  On first down, the Ravens attempted 18 passes versus 5 rushing attempts.  RB Ray Rice mowed the Pats field for 103 yards on just 11 carries, but CC continued his Air Mail assault to no real avail.  In the last drive before the end of the 1st half, CC went back to the running game and Rice.  However, Flacco went blind for a split second and killed the drive by throwing an interception.

On the other side of the ball, Matty (Greg Mattison), was feeling his blitzing package a bit much because it exposed his secondary as the weak link in Organized Chaos' armor.  CB Domonique Foxworth should be watching film and dusting off the tread marks from getting beat.  Defensively, Matty left more creativity to be desired, however, the Ravens kept the Pats under 100 yards rushing to keep their streak alive at 39 consecutive games.

Statistically, the Ravens beat the Pats in almost every category except on the scoreboard and time of possession.  A category that is detrimental to a team's success is in the penalty box and the Ravens managed to accumulate 9 penalties for 85 yards versus 5 penalties for 41 yards for the Pats.  At one point during the game, the refs were looking like the same ones from the previous night's Oklahoma at Miami contest where the refs were making it rain on 'em with yellow flags on almost every possession.   After their comments about the officiating, Ray Lewis and company should be expecting some Fedex envelopes stating “stop running your mouth about our officials and please cut a check in the amount of $$$$$.”

While there were some obvious no-call situations and a suspect ref crew, (e.g. phantom hits on Tom Brady, intentional grounding on a play way outside the tackle box), the game came down to one play and one drive in the final minutes of the game.  Who's Gon' Check Me Boo, Flacco led the Ravens right down to the red zone.  On fourth and goal with 28 seconds left in regulation, he dimed a pass right into the chest numbers of WR Mark Clayton and but he dropped it. Dropping a game winning pass, just got Clayton put in the vacants by Snoop and Chris Paltrow.
