Big Beard + Big Belly = Big Ratings

Kimbo and Big Country set a record, UFC 108 takes form, The Cali Kid is coming back to the cage, and DREAM entertains as always

Another week, another 2nd Round Submission

The Ultimate Fighter drew its largest audience ever last week when Kimbo Slice took on Roy “Big Country” Nelson in the 3rd fight of the season.  The hype for this match up was great, the fight however, not so much.  The first round saw both men circle and throw a few half-hearted jabs.  Eventually Big Country was able to get Kimbo to the ground.  He then pinned the bearded brawler’s arm between his legs (ala Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn II) and delivered some less than vicious punches until the round ended.  Herb Dean nearly called an end to the fight due to Slice being held in a dominant position, unable to defend the strikes.  The 2nd round began with Kimbo landing some solid punches, only to be taken down when he attempted to land a knee to the body of Big Roy.  Once again, Big Country gained the dominant crucifix position and landed unanswered punches until Dean stopped the fight.  What did we learn here?  Kimbo’s ground game is  . . . hmm . . . how to put it . . . leaves much to be desired.  This was made more apparent by the BJJ black belt Nelson.  We also learned that Big Country is crafty and experienced enough to stick to what he knows to win a fight.  An ability that may come in very handy during this tournament.  Wisely the producers of the show put on the hard tease to make it seem that Kimbo will return to the octagon one more time before the season ends.  As someone who is in the know, I can tell you that this is  . . . I’m just messing around.  I’ll have to wait and see just like the rest of you.

Several stories have surfaced in the last week or so.  Here’s a quick rundown:

The UFC 108 card is coming together quickly.  Three fights have been verbally agreed to.  Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort for the middleweight title, Rashad Evans taking on Thiago Silva, and Joe Lauzon challenging Sam Stout.  Its likely one more big fight will be added to the top of the card to make this a triple main event show to start off the new year.

In the “what the hell” story of the last week, Herschel Walker has signed a contract to fight with Strikeforce.  Walker is currently 47 years old.  This is an AWFUL idea.  I’m not knocking the guy for wanting to compete but you have to question Strikeforce for putting someone this age in a MMA fight for the first time.

Forrest Griffin has finally opened his mouth since being mauled by Anderson Silva at UFC 101 back in early August.  A brief interview can be viewed here [1] .  A personal favorite line of mine was “You know where I made my biggest mistake was saying I would fight that guy.”  Indeed Forrest, Indeed.

UFC released Hermes Franca, Marcus Aurelio, Chris Wilson, and Justin McCully

Urijah Faber signed a new multi year fight contract with WEC.  Expect “The Cali Kid” back in action in early 2010

Scott Smith re-signed with Strikeforce for a six fight deal.  Look for him to fight in December.

Mark Coleman has pulled out of his UFC 106 fight with Tito Ortiz due to an MCL tear.  Not sure who Tito will fight now.  I’ll throw out a few options:  Rich Franklin, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin, Keith Jardine,  Thiago Silva, Chuck Liddell, Stephan Bonnar.

Gina Carano will be featured on the cover of the upcoming issue of ESPN The Magazine “Body Issue”.  I’d like to take this time to personally thank whoever came up with this brilliant idea.  You are a true visionary and I salute you.  I would post a link here for your viewing pleasure but due to Ms. Carano’s lack of clothing I don’t know if its site appropriate.

UFC 105 will be shown free on Spike TV.  The main event for this show is Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture vs. Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera

Dream 11 took place live from Yokohama, Japan early yesterday morning.  The show featured Grand Prix and Super Hulk tournament matches as well as a title fight and 2 other bouts.

·          Kazuyuki Miyata defeated Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hatais by Unanimous Decision

·          (DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix Final) Hiroyuki Takaya defeated Hideo Tokoro by 2nd round TKO

·          (DREAM Lightweight Championship match) Shinya Aoki defeated Joachim Hansen by 2nd round submission via armbar

·          (DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix Final) Bibiano Fernandes defeated Hiroyuki Takaya by decision

Thanks for reading.  I’m done ‘til the next edition.  Stay tuned
