Gang Green falls victim to gimmick play to lose in final seconds
On Monday night in Miami, there was a young franchise quarterback who showed tremendous poise, accuracy and ability as he never lost focus and led his team to victory in a highly contested, see-saw battle to the finish.
His name was not Mark Sanchez, though. It was Chad Henne.
The 2008 second round pick showed exactly why the Dolphins never obtained a more seasoned backup for Chad Pennington as he completed 20 of 26 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns as he helped the Dolphins defeat the Jets 31-27 in Miami last night.
The loss marred a stunning debut by the newest Jet, Braylon Edwards, who caught five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in the loss. He showed the enormous physical presence he has as he made several remarkable catches and went up for the ball in traffic.
The Jets rushing attack never really got off the ground, though, halting the offense. Thomas Jones and Leon Washington combined for only 86 yards (though Jones did score twice.)
The defense, which up until now had been flirting with excellence, was unexpectedly flummoxed by the schemes run by Miami. They were unable to sack Henne at all and uncharacteristically let Ted Ginn Jr. sneak behind them for a long 53 yard touchdown pass.
The Jets get a shot at redemption this week, though, as they face another AFC East opponent, the Buffalo Bills. Dick Jauron's crew is in a state of disarray after losing to Cleveland, 9-6, on Sunday and Gang Green ought to take full advantage.
