76ers Start Season Against Magic; Plus My NBA Predictions

The Philadelphia 76ers come into the 2009-10 Season armed with a new Head Coach and a brand new offensive system. Whether or not new Head Coach Eddie Jordan's “Princeton Offense” will push the Sixers into the upper tier of the Eastern Conference is still up for debate.

First, to properly answer the questions about this seasons 76ers, you must learn about them.

After firing Maurice Cheeks at the beginning of last season, Assistant Tony DiLeo was tapped as his replace, although on an interim basis.  DiLeo led the red shirts to a legit record, allowing the team to qualify for the playoffs, drawing the Orlando Magic in the first round.

The Sixers took the series to 6 games, clearly giving the Magic their stiffest test until they eventually lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals.

However, the talk around town wasn't how tough the Sixers played the Magic is was their lackluster game 6 performance. Orlando dominated the boards and out hustled the Sixers all night long, and did all of this without superstar Dwight Howard. Howard had been suspended after an elbowing incident during game 5.

The Sixers were an athletic young team that could run the floor with some of the best teams in the NBA. However, Orlando showed just how many flaws this team has. The Sixers shot poorly from the floor, seemed to be confused at times on defense in a half-court set, and were out rebounded nearly every night.

After Tony DiLeo decided to reassume his old role, the Sixers search for a new Head Coach was on. Enter-Eddie Jordan, former head man of the Washington Wizards and the master behind “The Princeton Offense.”

Jordan and his system were brought in to help correct the problems that were glaringly apparent during last years playoffs.

Everyone knows the Sixers can run, but other than that they don't really run an offensive system that benefits their talents. In the Princeton Offense, Basketball is played like it use to be, with 2 guards 2 Forwards and 1 Center. The players aren't number like in most of today's offensive systems.

The offense preaches moving with out the ball and being able to determine what the defense is doing infront of you and reacting accordingly.

There is lots of rotation, and lots of pick-and-rolls, which means lots of shooting opportunities for everyone on the floor.

The regular season starts Tonight for the Sixers just where last season ended, against the defending Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic. Though, many things have changed on both ends of the court. The Sixers will be back to wearing their old-school style uniforms, along with their old-school style basketball system with not so old-school style players.

The Magic are almost an entirely different team. Gone are Hedo Turkoglu, Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston. In are Vince Carter, Jason Williams, Brandon Bass and Matt Barnes. Surprisingly enough, this Orlando Magic team looks even better than last years, certainly making them a contender in the East again.
