According to Yahoo sports, Rajon Rondo and the Celtics have agreed on an extension worth 5 years/$55 million. Rondo would have been a restricted free agent at the end of this season. Late last week, a contract agreement did not look good. Reportedly, the Celtics initial offer was for 5 year/$45 million, Rondo was looking for over $60 million. The two sides met in the middle.
This move makes a lot of sense for both the Celtics and Rondo. The Celtics need a point guard that can distribute the ball effectively to the Big Three and Company. They need a guy thinking pass first, score second. Rondo's style of basketball fits into this kind of system. Would Rondo be as successful on another team if they were looking for him to score first, and then pass?
The Hornets were in town last night along with their star player Chris Paul. It's almost impossible for me to compare the two point guards. Rondo and Paul may play the same position, but they are completely different kind of players. Paul has great quickness to the hole. And it's this quickness that allows him to get separation from defenders to take outside jumpers. Paul is a scorer. And his assists are created by his ability to score. His style of play doesn't fit what the Celtics need, as great as he is.
Rondo is completely different. His game are assists. Rondo runs the fast break brilliantly. Rondo has speed to get defenders backing up which creates passing lanes and he knows where the other four guys are on the court at all times. More often than not, he makes the right pass at the right time. The Celtics start everything on the defensive side of the ball and Rondo plays a big role. He is a great rebounder at his position which allows him to start the fast break much faster. Rondo can score, but generally it's by driving the lane. Other teams have to guard against the pass, which creates more driving opportunities for Rondo. However, Rondo does not have a reliable jumper and at times can hurt the team. Defenses dare Rondo to beat them with his outside shot and at the moment, he can't hit the shot with any consistency. Plus, he's awful at the free throw line. Rondo has an opportunity to develop a shot and to hit free throws over time. After all, he is only 23 years old. I believe that once Rondo develops a reliable outside shot, he has the potential to be a Steve Nash caliber player.
Now Rondo and his teammates will not have to answer any questions about his contract. No more distractions. He can now go out and do what he does best. Run the offense. In the 4 games the Celtics have played this year, Rondo has averaged over 11 assists a game. If Rondo has over 10 assists, the Celtics usually win the game. I'm thrilled that Rondo will mature while in a Celtic uniform. Great signing by the Celts.
