Sixers Team Report After Week 1 of the NBA Season
Posted By Mike Santa Barbara On Nov 4 2009 @ 11:09 pm In Philadelphia 76ers | No Comments
Four games down, 78 more to go for the 76ers and their record stands at 2-2. Losses to Eastern Conference powers , Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic, as well as two wins against the lowly Knicks and the equally as bad Bucks.
So what have we learned?
Well, we are only one week into the NBA season and it's hard to pick out specifics. However, based on what I've seen, below are 5 things I've noticed.
1. Louis Williams Has Played Outstanding
Louis Williams in his first season as the starting point guard has shown so far he's up for the challenge. Averaging 17.0 PPG and shooting over 50%, he's really getting the job done.
2. Andre Igoudala Has to Relax
If you look at his numbers you won't notice anything alarming besides his low shooting percentage. Though, a low shooting percentage this early in the season can be expected, it's certainly a worry. The Sixers simply can't contend if Iguodala doesn't play well. He's rushing shots and doesn't seem as if he's found a comfortable role yet in Eddie Jordan's new offense.
3. Marreese Speights Needs More Playing Time
Averaging over 17.0 PPG and 7.0 RPG off the bench. He's athletic and very competetive on the floor, getting in to more than one heated exchange with opposing stars this season, he's got the fire. And he's clearly a better option than Samuel Dalembert at times. Speights is averaging around 20 MPG, but he needs more.
4. Defense Needs to Improve
If the Sixers have improved during the offseason on the defensive side of the ball, they haven't shown it yet. They're still allowing way too many wide open 3pt attempts and have been lowsy under the boards. Sure scoring over 140 points in a game is impressive but now when you let up over 120 to the Knicks in the same game.
5. Someone Has to Find Elton Brand
Averaging just under 12.0 PPG and only 1.0 APG, it's just not getting it done. Like Iguodala he seems to be forcing to much. He needs to get comfortable, which means more touches are needed to get him into the groove. So, can't panic yet, but if this trend continues for Brand he's going to begin to look more and more like Sixer acquistions of the past.
