Week 9 Preview: Miami Dolphins @ New England Patriots

The Miami Dolphins (3-4) take their show on the road for another week, visiting the red hot New England Patriots (5-2) for this must see divisional matchup.

The Dolphins have been playing excellent football lately, winning three out of their last four, with the only loss coming after a second half collapse against the Saints, a game they could have won.  The Patriots have also been playing stellar football lately, outscoring their last two opponents 94-7, and come off a bye week.  New England should be rested and ready to go for this must watch show.  The Pats can pass, the Phins can run, and both teams can eat up the clock and play good defense.  These squads know each other very well, so expect a tough battle this Sunday.

The Patriots have really come together as of late, knocking off two inferior foes in convincing fashion, but they will not beat Miami like they did Tennessee and Tampa Bay.  New England is favored to win this game, but the way Miami seems to play up to their competition, the Pats should have their hands full if the Phins continue that trend.  The Pats are excellent against the pass, allowing only 176 yards in the air, but they can be somewhat beat on the ground, giving up an average of 109.  Miami will without a doubt test that New England run defense utilizing the Wildcat attack, as the Pats were the first team the Phins ever tried that offensive style against.  If Ricky and Ronnie can produce on the ground, that will help Miami win the time of possession battle, ultimately keeping Brady, Moss, and Welker off of the field; a key strategy while attempting to beat New England.

Miami needs to get pressure on Brady to prevent him from picking apart the defense.  When Brady has time to throw, he's lethal, but Tom usually has a tough time against this Miami defensive unit.  The Dolphins must get in Brady's face and force some turnovers.  The Pats will attempt to do the same to Henne, whose only interceptions came in that loss to the Saints.  If Henne, who has yet to fumble, doesn't turn over the ball, that drastically increases Miami's chance to win this game.  Though Henne wasn't that effective last week, outside of a nice touchdown pass, Miami still managed to find a way to beat the Jets, despite allowing the young quarterback to get sacked five times in the game.  Miami must keep Henne off of his back, and if they do, he can't throw interceptions or they will most likely lose.  Expect Miami to keep it on the ground, eat up the clock, and blitz Brady often.  If Miami can't pull off those key ingredients to victory, they probably won't win this game, because the Phins can not expect Ginn Jr. to run back two more kicks this week.
