The Sunday night game this weekend features the 5-2 Dallas Cowboys heading to Philadelphia to take on the 5-2 Philadelphia Eagles. Folks, first place is on the line and the winner will take sole position of first place in the tough NFC East. I say tough as we still cannot take the New York football Giants out of the picture yet even though the Giants have not been playing well of late.
Back to the Cowboys / Eagles. Both teams are on a high and yes folks both teams play a very similar style of football. In almost all statistics these teams are about as evenly matched as any two teams in the NFL can be. Points for, points against, you name it they are very close.
What does that mean to Cowboy and Eagle fans? What it means is we are in for one hell of a football game Sunday night. Am I nervous about this match-up? You betcha. Which Cowboy team will show? For that matter which Eagle team will show up?
For the Cowboys to win, they will have to focus on the ground game (I know I say that every week but I mean it here), time of possession and at the end of the day the winner may be the team that had the best special teams production, punt return, kick-off returns, field goals (Nick Folk has been quiet this year kicking for the Cowboys), field position. The Cowboys will use tight-end Jason Witten a lot this Sunday, don’t ask me why but the Eagles seem to have trouble covering tight-ends and look for Witten to pile up the receptions and ‘first down Cowboys’. Witten’s play between him and Dallas quarter back Tony Romo getting Witten the ball may very well be the turning point in the game. Dallas has weapons and if Romo sees the whole field like he has the last few weeks than Romo should be able to check 1-2 and even find receiver 3 but watch for Witten to be the number 1 and make a HUGE impact.
If Dallas has done their homework and I won’t say this blogger said so but they should hone in on the Eagle weakness of not being able to cover tight-ends which is where Witten keys into the game plan. The Dallas ‘O’ line if giving Romo the time will be huge and if Romo gets the time from the ‘O’ line to make plays than watch for it to be one exciting football game and I will even go that if Romo gets time he will find the open person and watch for a Cowboy victory. I know a lot of pieces of the puzzle have to fit in the right place but folks, this is the NFL and football is full of puzzles. The game will be won in the trenches, these two cities/teams hate each other and it will show Sunday night. With the Phillies loss to the Yankee’s in the baseball world series, the fans of Philadelphia have the Eagles and the NHL Philadelphia Flyers and as much as I love hockey, we know it takes second fiddle to the NFL in Philly.
As a note, Philly running back Brian Westbrook expects to play which will only hurt the Cowboys or who knows make them a better team but Westbrook is one of the best.
May the best team win and I end this blog Go Cowboys…….as always comments, questions, concerns, be back soon and enjoy the game…..
