A breakdown of how Gang Green can beat the Dirty Birds and keep their playoff hopes alive
Sunday December 20
Giants Stadium, E. Rutherford, New Jersey
Keys to Victory:
1. Get Sanchez throwing- Granted, quarterback Mark Sanchez is just returning from an injury, so allowances have to be made for him to get back up to speed. However, Atlanta has the third worst pass defense in the league, ceding 257 yards per game on average. They can be had through the air.
2. Ride Jones till he breaks down- Thomas Jones may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but he is proving that he can still be effective. Atlanta is not great in terms of defending the run, either, so Jones and Shonn Greene should both get plenty of work. The Jets will want to use both to control the clock.
1. Watch out for Gonzo- With Darrelle Revis shadowing Roddy White, Atlanta quarterback Chris Redman will need to look for another outlet. Tony Gonzalez remains one of the more dangerous tight ends in the game and the Jets will need to have David Harris watching him closely, especially near the goal line. Gonzalez matches up well with almost every linebacker the Jets have, so it may be necessary to bring up Kerry Rhodes to help out.
2. Rattle Redman- The Jets need to get a pass rush going early and often to disrupt Redman. The crowd noise should be a factor as well. The Falcons will be without star running back Michael Turner, so they'll have to depend on the pass.
Notes: Sanchez may end up being a game time decision…The Falcons won 27-14 the last time these teams played back in 2005.
Jets, 24, Falcons 10
