C'mon Giants fans, had you even heard the name “Bill Sheridan” before the rookie defensive coordinator was made into a convenient whipping boy with his firing on January 4?
Then today Big Blue has dismissed defensive line coach Mike Waufle. What can be inferred from the firing of these fall guys is that Tom Coughlin will definitely not be canned. While its obvious that the Giants defense was atrocious this year I find it a little too convenient to single out this unit for blame, when the overall team attitude and toughness was so poor.
There were significant injuries all year on defense. Doesn't it then become the head coach's job to navigate the team around the holes in their personnel with a revised game plan? Isn't it the head coach's job to have the team fired up and aggressive coming out of the tunnel every game regardless of if its the first team or the backup waterboy suiting up?
I'm not saying Tom Coughlin should be fired per se, although I would not fault the Giants brass for doing so. What I don't like is the half assed approach of firing a few of Coughlin's underlings but not the man himself. I think you either have confidence in the direction of the team and you shrug off a terrible and unlucky year….or you make wholesale changes.
Firing Sheridan doesn't change anything, except now Tom Coughlin has to break in a new defensive coordinator, his fourth I might add. Hopefully the team will experience an attitude adjustment and the defense will be healthier and more successful in 2010, making this look like a good move in retrospect, and not thew band aid I fear it is.
