The Celtics have been dealing with all sorts of injuries lately. KG with his knees. Paul Pierce was out for 2 weeks after having his knee drained twice to relieve infection. Marquis Daniels has been out with a thumb injury. Rajon Rondo was hurt earlier in the week with strained hamstring. Glen Davis only recently joined the team for the first time this season. And to top it all off, players have been battling the flu. Tony Allen missed last night's game because of the flu.
Though the Celtics have lost 4 out of their last 6, they have shown how much depth they have on this team. With two of their starters out, Pierce and KG, the Celtics turned to players like Rasheed Wallace and Tony Allen to come off the bench and step up and both players have delivered. I expected Sheed to perform well, but I've been really surprised by Tony Allen's play. Losing two starters for most teams during a 2-3 week period would be devastating, but it hasn't been that way for the Celts. They've been in most of the games they've lost over the two weeks, excluding the Phoenix Suns game from a week ago, proving the team will not go down without a fight. Two of their losses were very close in the 4th quarter and I couldn't help but to think if they had Pierce closing out those two games, they would have won. Despite losing 4 out of 6, they are in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference just behind the Cavs by .002 % points, with a record of 25-9. Pretty damn good if you ask me.
Last night the Celtics played their second game of 3 game road trip against the Atlanta Hawks. Kevin Garnett flew with the team, however did not play. Coach Doc Rivers did provide some good news about KG's recovery before the game. Coach Rivers indicated that if Friday's night game was a playoff game, Garnett would be on the court. He was held out of the game for precautionary reasons. That is good news for Celtics fans. KG appears to be getting closer to returning to the team. I say take your time KG. Even though we would all love to see him back in uniform, it's more important to have him 100 % fresh for the playoffs.
Pierce returned to the team Wednesday against Miami Heat and helped the team win in OT. He had a good game against the Heat. Littlie rusty, but that is to be expected. However, last night Pierce looked even better against the Hawks especially on the defensive side of the ball. Another good sign for the Celts. The Celtics might actually get all 5 of their starters back very soon. With veterans on the club, I would rather have them sit out in December and January than late in the spring when the C's are making a push for banner 18.
The Celtics are getting their bench back healthy as well. Glen Davis joined the team day after New Year's and dropped 15 points against the Raptors. He has a cast on his thumb still and it is obvious he's in pain, but good to see him back on the court and playing with the team. Marquis Daniels should be getting closer to returning from his thumb injury. Daniels started to participate in practice drills with the team. No word on his return date just yet but good sign he's participating in drills.
When this team gets everybody back healthy, they will overtake the Cavs in the Eastern Conference for the number one seed. And they will give the Lakers a run for their money for the number one seed in the league.
