I have talked to two sources on the phone tonight and had another e-mail confirming to me that the Ottawa Senators are in serious trade talks with the Edmonton Oilers.
Sens GM Bryan Murray is trying to unload defensemen Brian Lee and Sens prospect Jim O'Brien. Both are recent first round picks of the Senators but neither seem to fit into the Sens plans. I have blogged on numerous occasions about the Lee situation and O'Brien has been flat out awful in Binghamton playing on the fourth line. Coming back to Ottawa would be center Andrew Cogliano. Cogliano is in the final year of his entry level contract and would be an RFA next year with no arbitration rights. The Oilers AHL affiliate in Springfield play the Binghamton Senators this weekend adding more fuel to the fire. It's clear Murray wants to add some scoring up front and after the Sens fifth loss in a row, things are going downhill fast.
As for the Senators on the ice tonight, they fell 6-1 to the Atlanta Thrashers and look to be going backwards. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Ottawa it did tonight.
I don't want to hear about scoring chances and shots on goal by the Sens tonight, bottom line is the Sens top players aren't getting it done and this business is about results. Ottawa continued to get below average goaltending from Pascal LeClaire as he was pulled for the 2nd time in 9 days in favour of Brian Elliott after allowing four goals in just over a period of work.
The Sens defense is soft and playing without a purpose. That includes Phillips and Volchenkov. Matt Carkner is the only one playing with any passion or heart on defense. The soft bunch of Campoli, Karlsson and Picard continued to do anything of substance on the blueline.
The Sens forwards haven't elevated their game at all and it's time for Mike Fisher and Alex Kovalev to prove their worth and earn their money. This is when star players are supposed to be shine. It's about time someone elevated their play. Chris Neil has been by far and away the best Sens forward during this five game losing streak.
When is someone wearing a letter going to speak up and do something about the on-ice results? We keep hearing from Fisher and Phillips about what needs to be done to be successful yet nobody seems to translate those quotes into results on the ice which is quite sad as I have a ton of respect for both players. Someone has to call them out as it seems everyone who covers the team in this city is afraid to call the longstanding Senators players out. Does anyone else think Chris Kelly shouldn't be wearing an “A”?
Back on Thursday with a postgame blog or possilby earlier if a trade breaks!
After going 4-1 without their captain, the Sens have dropped
