Game Recap: Chicago BlackHawks 4 Edmonton Oilers 2
The Blackhawks flew into Edmonton realizing they needed a big win over a struggling Oilers team and definitely found a way to come out victorious. The final score of the game could have been a lot worse if it was not for the heroics of Jeff Derouin-Deslaurier making some big saves at key moments.
I am not sure what happened with the Oilers as most predicted they would come out strong and play a tough game against the visiting Blackhawks. Perhaps Patrick Kane persuaded Sam Gagner at dinner as those two plus Jonathon Toews and Taylor Chorney went to dinner on Monday night with Kane covering the bill.
Toews opened the scoring 44 seconds into the game to set the tone early, the Hawks were all over the
Oilers through the first 2 periods outshooting them 28-13 and were dominating every aspect of the game and coming out 4-1 after 2 periods of play. Brouwer, Byfuglien, and Hossa added the other 3 goals with Pisani getting a late one to get the Oilers on the scoreboard.
The late goal seemed to spark the Oilers as they came out a lot stronger in the third period with Ryan Potulny notching a goal at 5:44 of the period. The third was a pretty evenly played period but the Hawks were able to shut it down and come out with a big win.
The Hawks played like a better team tonight albeit against a weaker opponent but let's not hope they get into this “show up for one game and stink it up for the next” as they played terrible in Ottawa…Strong in Calgary…mediocre in Vancouver…strong in Edmonton.
As for the Oilers they have some good players on the team, but absolutely no team chemistry whatsoever. With all the crtics bashing the Hawks with bad signings one can look at Kevin Lowe and ultimatley say that his extensions were even worse. Horcoff and Gilbert more then likely being the worst of them all. They are “cap strapped” and expect some salary dumping this season as they only have about 5 million coming off the shelves next year with a plethora of RFA players they need to make decisions on.
As for the Hawks many people have mixed thoughts on what the Hawks should do with the roster, we all know before next season starts we need to lose some salary. As first noted by John Jaeckel, an excellent writer/blogger, he mentioned before anyone else the possibilities of signing soon to be UFA Ilya Kovalchuk. After pondering that situation I could not agree more. How you ask? Here's why.
Assuming a deal as the following would send Versteeg, Barker, Skille and a 1st round pick over to the Thrashers for Kovalchuk gives Atlanta some NHL proven players and some much needed depth and even more youth. This is how the Hawks lineup would possibly look.
Sharp/ Madden/ Byfuglien
Eager/Fraser/Kopecky with Ladd, Burish, and Bickell also
Look at the forward lines, pretty solid. The Hawks would still need to make a seperate deal for another defenseman however but they have the assets to do that still. Kovalchuk would be a rental player for the year unless the Hawks decided to dump off more salary and try to resign the superstar in the off season. While losing some key members well it's going to happen regardless, might as well get a superstar to the team to strengthen our chances at a cup. This is all purely speculation and has been talked on forums and throughout the media for a while now but in my humble opinion I like the possibilities.
