Eight Ain’t Great

Well at least the Flames got a point out of this mess.

The Calgary Flames fresh off of bringing up their #1 offensive prospect Mikael Backlund to play on the third line (I don't get it either) marched into Big D to face the Stars. Only to come up on the losing end of a 4-3 shootout. But at least it's a point.

I now truly believe the book is out on how to defend the Flames. You will notice in the 1st period when Calgary scored the back to back power play goals, the Stars sat back in a passive box. Basically letting them Flames have time on the outside to move the puck around. Which gave the Flames players time to move the puck around to generate scoring opportunities. And the Flames cashed in twice.

Skip to the next power play for the Flames and you saw a different Stars penalty kill strategy. They attacked the puck carrier immediately and did not let the Flames set up shop. The end result… Flames couldn't make a pass to save their lives, and got nothing on the power play.

The Flames also continued to show that the only way they can generate 5 on 5 offense is by banging and crashing the net, thank god Jokinen was rewarded with a goal with some good hustle to get to a loose puck to make the score 3-1.

Full marks to the Stars for sticking with it and getting themselves back in the game and tying it in the 3rd on a two man advantage. Then finally winning in a shootout as Alex Auld made 3 good stops on Jokinen, Lundmark, and Iginla respectively to win the game for Dallas.

The only piece of good news for the Flames is they did get a point in Dallas, and have a quick turn around playing the Coyotes tomorrow night in Phoenix. The reality of the rest of the situation is the Flames have lost 8 in a row and show no signs of righting the ship anytime soon.

Have a good one!
