Make it Eight

So the Flames dropped another game to make it eight in a row in the loss coloumn.
Fortunately they escaped big D with a point in one of the odder games you will ever see losing 4-3 to the Dallas Stars.
Lets start with the good. Iginla, Jokinen and Phaneuf all scored and the Flames played a fairly solid game most of the night.
Now to the bad. I would have to say the book is now official on how to defend the Calgary Flames. If you put pressure on this team they have shown that they just don't have the skill necessary to make the quick passes required to beat a high pressure system. Dallas decided to sit back in a passive box on the 3 minute powerplay the Flames had giving players time to move the puck around and look for plays, and the Flames jumped on them scoring two quick ones. If you watched the penalty kill for the Stars in the second period they went to a high pressure penalty kill and the Flames had no answer.
Now for the ugly. Rene Bourque apparently forgot that you need to drop a broken stick and got a brain dead penalty for it, followed by a tough call on Bouwmeester to give the Stars a 5 on 3 advantage and they capitalized to tie the game. Then Kiprusoff takes a pretty weak slashing penalty in OT, and finally snapped taking another one a few seconds later that Ron Hextall would have been proud of.
Full marks to the Stars for taking advantage of the opportunities in front of them to get the game to overtime and the shootout where Alex Auld made three good stops on Iginla, Lundmark, and Jokinen respectively.
Then there was the oddest penalty in this game when Mark Fistriki pulled off Eric Nystroms helmet in there fight and decided to try and club him with it getting himself a match penalty in the process. I wonder if there will be a one game suspension tacked on by the league in this case.
Bottom line is the Flames got a point but they continue to show that if you pressure them defensively they do not have the play making skill to make a team pay for it. Until this problem is addressed the Flames have a serious problem and it won't get better.
Tonight the Flames are in Phoenix to take on the Coyotes and I wonder about two things tonight. Will Mikael Backulnd get a chance to play on the top two lines tonight since there is no point in my opinion to bring him up to play a 3rd line roll? And will there be more Flames fans or Coyotes fans in the building?
Have a good one!
