It is unclear exactly what his comments meant, but by some interpretations, it could be said that he's quitting golf. In an interview with the Golf Channel, Daly alluded to giving up on golf, stating that his financial situation, and poor play have made it impossible to continue playing.“My financial situation is putting me where I cannot focus on my game,” Daly said. “I'm putting too much pressure on myself.”
I'm sure that paying alimony to his 4 ex-wives has something to do with his financial predicament…
“The few sponsors that I have are great, but it's not getting me through these times. Maybe my mind may change down the road, but right now I don't have the money to be on the TOUR. My game has never been the same since my rib injury during The Honda Classic in 2007.”
It would be a shame to lose the always colourful Daly, who is often referred to as the “people's champion”. His presence at the Telus Skins game always results in some off-the-wall antics, including unprecedented fan interaction. I remember watching him challenge a spectator to a “closest to the pin” competition on a par 3, with the stakes being a case of beer. The catch was, Daly had to hit his ball off of a can of Diet Pepsi. Daly won, and I can only imagine how the spectator was treated at Daly's trailer after the round.
“I can't keep taking spots from guys out here playing this bad,” said Daly.
Whether or not he retires, I'm sure he'll somehow be in the public eye. He is currently working on a reality show called “Being John Daly”, which likely covers more of his off-course problems than any golfing he has done.
Anyway, if it ends up being true, thanks John for the memories, and congrats on your recent weight-loss. You'll always be a man of the people. Stay clean, and live well!
