The Panic Button first appeared at the beginning of January. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were both out of the lineup with knee injuries. But as soon as the Panic Button showed up I grabbed it and hid it in the closet. After all, what's the worry? Paul Pierce will be joining the team again after being out for a couple of weeks with the knee injury. No worries.
Celtics go on a losing streak. The Panic Button appeared for the second time.
I grabbed the Panic Button and flushed it down the toilet. After all, what's the worry? Kevin Garnett will be joining the team again after being out for 10 games with the knee injury. No worries.
After two wins, I was feeling pretty good. KG looked rusty but energized. Then the Celts played Orlando Thursday night. KG didn't have that same energy, the knee was clearly bothering him. The Celtics allowed the Magic to get back in the game and lost.
The Panic Button appeared again.
I dug a hole in my backyard and buried the Panic Button. After all, what's the worry? Maybe KG had an off night. Maybe the Celts were caught sleeping. They did have a shot to win the game in the end. No time to dwell because they would have to play the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night. No worries.
Unfortunately, the Celtics didn't realize there was a game on Friday night because they didn't show up. Atlanta had control from the start and never let the Celts in it. Boston lost all 4 games this season to Atlanta. Not good. This is a team they have faced in the playoffs two years in a row and needed 7 games to beat them both years.
After the Celtics lost on Friday night, I didn't want to look down at the table because I knew what would be staring up at me. Lousy Panic Button.
This time I brought the Panic Button on a little drive. I dropped the Panic Button off in the middle of Manhattan with no cash, no map, no GPS. Good luck trying to find your way back to my house. After all, the Celtics would be playing the Lakers on Sunday at the Garden. Games don't get any bigger than this. Great opportunity for this team to unite. I'm feeling it. Ubuntu, baby.
Celtics have the lead. Lakers come back. Offensive foul on Paul Pierce. Oh what do ya know, Kobe drained a jumper with seconds left in the game.
Panic Button, how did you find your way back?
That's okay. Celts still have a chance. Coach Rivers will draw up a play for the win. Celts inbound the ball and there it is RAY ALLEN FOR THREE…
And a miss.
The Panic Button is not going away this time. Its stapled, duck taped and glued to my hand. I can't ignore it anymore. The Panic Button has been officially pressed.
Can you hear the sirens?
