Toronto, February 4, 2010:
The Maple Leafs have shutdown defenseman Mike Komisarek for the remainder of the campaign, putting to an end Komisarek's dream of playing for the United States in the upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Komisarek will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready for training camp at the beginning of the 2010/2011 campaign.
A prize offseason acquisition, Komisarek struggled early in the season for the blue and white, seemingly trying to do to o much on the ice shift after shift, most often leaving him out of position or turning the puck over in the defensive zone.
It should be noted that prior to his January 2nd injury, the big defensemen was playing his best hockey of the year and it gave the ACC faithful something to look forward to heading in to the 2010/2011 season where the full complement of big defensive studs Brian Burke has assembled will be on display nightly.
While it was briefly floated after the Tuesday night win over the Devils, Garnet Exelby remains a Toronto Maple Leaf. Having been left in the dressing room for the third period of the clash with the Devils it was widely speculated Exelby had been dealt to the Los Angeles Kings for a mid-round pick.
Time will tell what will happen with Exelby and Jeff Finger, but the season ending shoulder surgery for Mike Komisarek will no doubt factor into one – if not both – remaining on the roster after the March 3 trade deadline.
Speculation regarding Thomas Kaberle and the status of his no-trade clause, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Lee Stempniak remains – although after the magic act performed Sunday by Brian Burke and his staff, there may be a few surprises left regarding which Leafs will remain in the blue and white.
What is Thomas Kaberle's trade value on the open market – where do you see the puck-mover ending up, what's coming back to Toronto?
Where does Mikhail Grabovski fit in to the Leafs plans moving forward?
Where will the Leafs find a first line centre?
Can this team make the playoffs? Where do you see them finishing the season?
Who would you target on the UFA market come July 1?
