How the Caps measure up to the to the 83-84 Oilers

The Capitals' win streak hit a baker's dozen tonight despite looking off their game with two feet of snow coming, a fall referred to by some as Snowvechkin.  Washington looks completely unbeatable right now.

They lead the league in first period differential, but the last three games they've failed to score first.  They responded with four unanswered to beat Boston, the last three goals of the game against the Rangers beginning with Ovechkin's left-handed beauty, and five unanswered tonight.  They can win in a shootout like they did in New York, the only time in the last eight games they've allowed more than two goals, since they may have the greatest offense of my lifetime.

Adjusted statistics are commonly used in baseball to put a season in perspective when someone's stats deviate from the norm an excessive amount.  The example I always point to when explaining adjusted stats is Greg Maddux's 1.56 ERA during the 1994 season, the teeth of the steroids era, the best adjusted ERA at that point since before World War 1.  Well the NHL still hasn't gotten back to the level of scoring the league enjoyed before the neutral zone trap era, which has the opposite effect of steroids on scoring.  Two years ago Ovechkin put up the third highest adjusted goal total in the history of the NHL, one spot ahead of Gretzky's 92 in 81-82.  This year the Capitals, as a team, are on pace for the third highest goal total of all time, one spot ahead of the 83-83 Oilers (I crunched the numbers up to the minute).

Miscellaneous: It was nice to see Ovechkin hit 500 points last night on a highlight move, but the fact that Lindros did it in less games really takes away from it.  When he hit 200 goals he joined a club with Gretzky and Lemieux…  Varlamov may be starting for Hershey this weekend…  Backstrom didn't come out for tonight's third period…  This is why you don't tug Superman's cape…

Going to have to take issue with calling this still the 'neutral zone trap era' There was far more 'picking' going on in the 70's and 80's than there is today. The Oilers of the 80's (whom I detest with all my heart and soul) could roll out 40 goal scorers on the 3rd line!!! The Caps are a great offensive team but not in the Oilers of the 80's league.

I guess you're right, it's not the neutral zone trap that keeps scoring down, but it still hasn't reached the point it was in 93-94.http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Stat/LeagueGoals.aspxAnd relative to the rest of the league the Caps are scoring more than the 83-84 Oilers relative to the rest of the league. On one hand you can argue that expansion has diluted the talent base, so it's not as impressive now. On the other you can say that today's players are so much bigger and faster that Washington is even more impressive. But to say they had three 40 goal scorers on the third line – A) they only had three forwards score 40 period http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/EDM/1984.html and B) there were an additional two goals a game to go around back then – 40 goals didn't put you in the top 10.

That Oiler team had six hall of famers. Not to mention that hockey in the 80's had way more clutching and grabbing within the rules. And the concept of “net presence” didn't really exist, because guys could just shove you out of the way.I'd have backed you up a little if you'd said big goalie pads, but I'm not buying the whole “trap game era” argument, especially when you're saying a team averaging 3.9 goals per game these days is comparable to one that was better than 5.5 per game back then.

One detail you should also remember was that the Oilers were so devastating 4 on 4 that the league changed the coincidental minor rule! But other than the trap the reason goals went down was two fold. The Butterfly system of goaltending, and goaltenders learning how to handle the puck. By going down on their knees goaltenders increased the amount of their body in front of the net. Before that up to half their body was above the bar. It was another reason why goaltenders were 5'8″ (I'm 6'6 to put it in perspective. When I go down there is not that much to shoot at.) Once it was no longer considered Taboo to go down (about the mid 80's) goals against did go down with it. Goaltenders have handled the puck since the 50's but once Ron Hextall started playing it like a 3rd defenceman that almost single handedly killed the effectiveness of the dump and chase. And eventually the league changed the rules. aka The Trapezoid. And most of that just didn't make a difference against the Oilers. They went through the zone with speed. They created space, and they had the best player to ever play the game (forgive me Mr. Cherry) threading passes through impossible places that even Dave Semenko had 81 career goals! And even if you managed to slow down Gretzky. (You didn't stop him) there was still Kurri, Messier, Anderson, Coffey, etc. etc. Speaking of Coffee he even had a 50 goal season!!!All due respect to the Caps but they just don't have that kind of fire power.

Well I changed my neutral zone trap line, since I certainly acknowledge there are a number of reasons league scoring is down so much and that isn't the point I'm trying to make. I'm not saying NHL games average over two less goals a game than they did 25 years ago for any one reason, merely that they do. But the fact that the Caps are scoring over 43% more than an average team – the only way this isn't evidence this is a historic offense is if you think the rest of the league is bad. As a team they have 37 goals more than the next highest scoring team, 47 more than the the third highest. That rounds off to a goal per game more than any other team. I mean Ovie's got 39 – take him away and they're still in the mix as the highest scoring team.
