The Capitals' win streak hit a baker's dozen tonight despite looking off their game with two feet of snow coming, a fall referred to by some as Snowvechkin. Washington looks completely unbeatable right now.
They lead the league in first period differential, but the last three games they've failed to score first. They responded with four unanswered to beat Boston, the last three goals of the game against the Rangers beginning with Ovechkin's left-handed beauty, and five unanswered tonight. They can win in a shootout like they did in New York, the only time in the last eight games they've allowed more than two goals, since they may have the greatest offense of my lifetime.
Adjusted statistics are commonly used in baseball to put a season in perspective when someone's stats deviate from the norm an excessive amount. The example I always point to when explaining adjusted stats is Greg Maddux's 1.56 ERA during the 1994 season, the teeth of the steroids era, the best adjusted ERA at that point since before World War 1. Well the NHL still hasn't gotten back to the level of scoring the league enjoyed before the neutral zone trap era, which has the opposite effect of steroids on scoring. Two years ago Ovechkin put up the third highest adjusted goal total in the history of the NHL, one spot ahead of Gretzky's 92 in 81-82. This year the Capitals, as a team, are on pace for the third highest goal total of all time, one spot ahead of the 83-83 Oilers (I crunched the numbers up to the minute).
Miscellaneous: It was nice to see Ovechkin hit 500 points last night on a highlight move, but the fact that Lindros did it in less games really takes away from it. When he hit 200 goals he joined a club with Gretzky and Lemieux… Varlamov may be starting for Hershey this weekend… Backstrom didn't come out for tonight's third period… This is why you don't tug Superman's cape…
