Oh by the way the Flames walked into Sunrise Florida to take on the Panthers, and completely dominated the game winning 2-1 outshooting the Cats 40-13.
The score was not indicitive of the play at all. Had it not been for the heroics of Tomas Vokoun it could have been a lot worse. Ales Kotalik and Mark Giordano scored power play goals for the Flames while Dennis Seidenberg replied on the power play for the Panthers.
Congratulations to Flames captain Jarome Iginla playing in his 1000th game today and all those games with one team makes the feat even more special and rare. Iginla had a solid night with a few chances to score, but was relatively quiet for his party.
Jay Bouwmeester made his return to Florida, for the first time since being traded to the Calgary Flames in the off season ahead of the free agent period. Jay was Jay tonight with a ho hum 27:26 of ice time along with an assist. Jay Bouwmeester is a machine!
Another reason for the tight score in tonights game was the ice. I have to apologize to the Saddledome ice crew. I thought the ice in Calgary has been poor all year, but the ice was so bad in this game that the puck looked like it was filled with super balls!
And if you couldn't pick on the Panthers any further they feed you with this ammo. For tonights game any member of the press was offered free tickets to the game, along with free food, and free booze!!! Hardly any members of the media took the Panthers up on their offer. If that does not talk about the state of the game in the southern US I don't know what does. Good on the Panthers to try it though.
The Flames now head up the road to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning and help welcome their new owner Jeff Vinik who just bought the Bolts for $170M US. Now before you get too excited Vinik is assuming about $80M in debt in the deal so OK Hockey LLC. gets only $90M to split between themselves after their initial $200M investment. Yikes.
Daymond Langkow will play in his 1000th game tomorrow in Tampa as well! The Flames will hold a ceremony on Thursday to honor both Daymond, and Jarome.
On a NHL note the Dallas Stars are now for sale. Tom Hicks appears to be in some trouble making it work in Dallas. Hockey fans should be very concerned that we could be looking at another lockout sooner rather than later if the Southern teams can't financially make a go of it.
And since you are all dying to know…. Saints 38 Colts 34 Freeney not playing or being at 100% is HUGE!
