Pennington to Jets rumors heat up
He never wanted to leave in the first place, but would Chad Pennington be interested in returning to the team that so unceremoniously cast him aside?
Well, if you believe the rumors (which appear to have some legs to them)…yes.
Pennington, a soon to be free agent, is coming off shoulder surgery from which he is expected to make a full recovery. The Dolphins have already installed Chad Henne as their starter and have Pat White and Tyler Thigpen under contract. Pennington is better than either one of those options, but he will cost more as well.
A return to the Jets, though awkward, makes perfect sense. Pennington is content to be a back up at this stage in his career and is a clear upgrade over Kellen Clemens. While his arm strength has always been a huge liability, nobody ever doubted the power of Pennington's mind. His intelligence would be a huge asset to Mark Sanchez. The rookie quarterback could accelerate his learning curve exponentially if he had access to Pennington's analysis of defenses and how to beat them.
Of course, just because a scenario like this makes sense doesn't mean it's an automatic slam dunk to happen. For one thing, there are several other teams in similar situations who may bid for Pennington's services (Arizona needing a tutor for Matt Leinart is too strong a possibility to ignore.) For another, the Jets, frothing at the mouth to have Brett Favre waltz in for a year, rejected Pennington's years of loyal service with extreme prejudice. Whether or not he is in the mood to do them any favors is debatable.
One thing is clear: New York needs a veteran presence behind Sanchez. Who better than one of predecessors?
