The Ottawa Senators played host to the Calgary Flames and came away with a 3-2 win.
I am starting to really starting to feel bad for Brent Sutter. If it isn't one thing it's another with this team. Tonight it was the defense core's turn to stink out the joint. The Flames D gave up more turnovers than I dare count because I was out of toes by the end of the 2nd period.
I'll start with the good for the Flames and Miikka Kiprusoff was very solid tonight. One went in on a freaky double bounce, one from a horrible turnover that bounced out front to Ruutu, and finally a cross crease pass that Jason Spezza buried after Pardy forgot to play the pass. He also made a fine stop up of Johnathon Cheechoo after Cheechoo faked a shot and went around the net for the wrap around. Fortunately for the Flames Miikka laid out and made a good stop with the paddle of his stick.
The other good thing for the Flames was the play of the top line for most of the game. The Stajan-Iginla-Hagman was solid all night scoring both goals for the Flames, and might I say a couple fine finishes on the parts of Stajan and Hagman. It was very nice to see that Jarome Iginla finally played a motivated game and hopefully he keeps this play up down the stretch.
The D stunk tonight. There is no nice way to say it. Cory Sarich was the worst of the bunch and is showing that he is no longer an NHL calibur defenceman. It is time for Cory to get a night off and get Aaron Johnson in a game just for a change of pace and maybe to wake up Sarich. The rest of the defence wasn't any better.
The Calgary Flames now have two games left at home before the Olympic break and it is imperative that they get four points out of those two games. If not I would expect more changes to come. Philly seems to be the suitor for the Flames this time around. Could Simon Gagne finally be coming to Calgary after 5 years of rumors? (see Jokinen, Olli)
Ending on a good note. Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow will be honored Thursday for playing their 1000th games on this road trip. Congratulations to both! That is an impressive milestone!
Have a good one!
