Just my quick analysis of the deal between the Chicago BlackHawks and the Minnesota Wild today.
The Players were:
Nick Leddy (2009 1st round Pick)
Barker was on his way out regardless as many feel because of his salary 3.1 mill through 2011/2012 and slow improvements defensively and with acquriing a steady but smaller (then Barker) defenseman in Johnsson (left handed shot)will truly improve the back end playing along side “assumed” Brent Sopel. In 2001-2002 and 2003-2004 he was selected the Flyers best defenseman. Nick Leddy was the first selection by the Wild in 2009. A “smallish” defenseman 5'11 179lbs born in MN in the year 1991. Purely a project in the making and currently playing at the University of Minnesota.
Overall a good deal by the Blackhawks, this will provide a better defensive corp heading into the playoffs and we will have a good look at how he does in the upcoming 2 final games before the Olympic freeze. While Johnsson makes about 1.7 mill more then Barker he is a UFA at the end of the year and more then likely will be let go to free up salary cap space.
While I do not believe the Hawks are done dealing at this point, I do however project smaller deals to be made prior to the March trade deadline. I feel they will still be looking at acquiring another defenseman even though Sopel (the warhorse) has been excellent thus far.
