Atlanta moving to Winnipeg?

Scott Taylor of citifm and the Winnipeg Free Press is reporting a rumor in his citifm blog. here it is….

OK, here’s the rumour: Wealthy David Thomson of Toronto, the man who most of the shares of the MTS Centre and True North Sports and Entertainment in Winnipeg, has purchased the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League and will move them to Winnipeg for the 2010-11 season. The Moose will move to Saskatoon. The announcement will be made right after the Olympics. Believe whatever it is you want to believe.

I wouldn't hold my breath until a more reliable source went with it, but it is certainly an interesting thought.

Have a good one!

Oh how I wish I could believe this one… It would be a simple re-alignment for the league as well.Winnipeg moves to the Central division, Nashville moves to the Southeast.

It wouldn't surprise me at all… You have to think that any new owner would have been consulted on the Kovalchuk trade though, which makes me wonder a bit…

Oh how the league needs to realign a few divisions. Damn Detroit should be in the East.

Shane, I certainly hope what you are saying is true and no one would love to see another team in Canada than myself and Winnipeg I think would have the fan base to make it a success. With that being said I remember a recent interview with NHL Commish Bettman and I am pretty sure GB said it more than twice that expansion was not really on the table right now but hey, I still hope I read it here first. Quebec would be my next City to try and house another Canadian NHL team…..thoughts?????

I'd like to see Quebec City, and another team in Southern Ontario, but I wouldn't go any further than that. The problem with Quebec City is they need to build the rink!

and Winnipeg of course. But 9 teams in Canada is likely the limit.

If this is true, great news to get a team back in Winnipeg where they rightfully deserve one, far too many teams drawing peanuts…pathetic numbers yet BUTTMAN allows them to continue operation.

He did it for the big money TV agreement. It didn't work. Gary ain't getting canned anytime soon over it but the other owners are going to start asking why they shouldn't look at selling or relocating themselves. There are only 3 teams that I think are truly in any serious threat to move and they are Florida, Atlanta, and Phoenix. I could honestly see teams moved to Winnipeg, Las Vegas, and Ontario. Then we all know Gary would love 32 teams in the league, Now you expand to Quebec City, and Las Vegas.I also would not rule Seattle out of the equation. They could easily take the place of an Ontario team. This still leaves Gary with a reasonable American presence, and it would throw Canada the bone they have been waiting for. And to be honest shut us up.

If the league is willing to fight for the Phoenix Coyotes, I highly doubt they will allow a team to be moved from the #8 US market any time soon. The Thrashers have had major issues ever since the Dany Heatley car crash that killed Dan Snyder. While many of you are so eager to get all Canadian and view the Kovalchulk trade as a reason to completely sign off on the team's relocation, I would argue that the team is merely re-identifying itself. They are 2-1-2 since the trade, nothing to scoff at. Kovalchuk is the last remnant of the Heatley draft era. Now that he is gone, the slate is clean for Bogosian, Kane, Little, and Bergfors to become the new era of success and ticket sales. It isn't over here in Atlanta. The home game following “the trade” saw a crowd of nearly 17,000. Think about it. The home game that the face of the franchise is traded, support shows up to see the team win, which they did. When the playoffs came to town “that one year,” this place was totally nuts. The league knows there are people here that will support the team once they can re-establish a core foundation. The Atlanta Spirit ownership also has a deal with the arena that states the lease is only valid if both teams play there. AKA, if the Thrashers are sold, the Hawks won't have rights to play at Philips Arena. Given that the Hawks are becoming a successful NBA team, I doubt AS is selling them too. Besides, if a team does go to Canada, it will definitely not be Winnipeg. In sum, as juicy of an opportunity that this franchise may seem for a new Canadian team, it just isn't going to happen any time soon.

Why on earth are the Thrashers 3rd last in attendance this year? 13,203. source ESPN In 2009 they were 29th. 2008 they were 22nd. 2007 21st. 2006 23rd. 2004 22nd. 2003 28th. 2002 28th. 2001 23rd.That is an impressive history of unwavering fan support. I hate to tell you this but the NHL has accepted the fact they won't get the big TV deal privately. So now they need strong franchises, and a team that has NEVER broken the top 20 in attendance is not a strong franchise.

The circumstances around this franchise have prevented it from building a strong tradition. Stefan was a draft bust. Lehtonen was a bust. Heatley killed a man and decided he had to leave town. Kovalchuk wanted a lot of money. The ownership that decided to buy this team wasn't prepared at all and have be infighting since the day they bought it.Your basing the character of this hockey market on a team that has had the worst of obstacles put in front of it. You can't just sit there and look at only attendance numbers as if there is no rhyme or reason other than “hockey in the south does not work.” You clearly don't have a good understanding of what has gone on in the inner-workings of the franchise, as most people don't.

My problem with the Atlanta franchise is this is their second go at it. It failed the first time and it is in trouble again. If the people of Atlanta want a team then fill the building! It's simple. As an example in Calgary when the Flames stunk for 7 years in a row missing the playoffs they still averaged 16,000+Now Atlanta isn't alone with this problem. Any team that can't average 15,000+ in a gate driven league has a problem as it comes down to butts in seats. Don't mistake it as a Canada/US thing EVERY team needs to put people in the stands. If they can't they can't survive. Owners have cost certainty so if you can't make it work with a hard cap then it's never going to work in that market. The problem tends to be in non traditional markets is that if the team is winning people will go out. If it isn't then they won't. And that is a shame for the hardcore fans in any market.

I can think of a few Canadians that will slap down 300-500M for a franchise. The economic decline has not hurt Canada anywhere near what happened in the US.

And when I say re-identification, obviously its not something the team is willingly doing. They did not willingly give up Kovalchuk. But at this point, I'm not so sure the departure of Kovlchuk wasn't a good thing. For many years they have tried to build around him, but as we are finding out in New Jersey, Kovalchuk is a one-way player who is on the ice for just as many goals against as goals he scores. It is time for Atlanta to build a team by comittee, rather than just duct taping players to Kovalchuk, who isn't a leader or cornerstone no matter how much people want him to be.Basically, my whole point is that the thrashers are in a transitional phase that the NHL is unlikely to give up on.

Oh yah Kovalchuk is a floater. I think Waddell made a pretty good deal.
