Janikowski in Black & Silver for four more years
The Raiders have been one o f the busier teams so far this offseason while addressing their coaching staff and have now made the first of hopefully many critical roster decisions. Announced yesterday was the re-signing of Kicker Sebastian Janikowski to a four year, $16 million dollar deal. Reportedly $9 million of this deal is guaranteed which of course makes it likely that this position will be one we won’t have to worry about for a while. The special teams were very not great but definitely not a weak spot of the team overall and so it made sense to keep some of this core together. Janikowski missed only 3 FG attempts last season and all 3 were beyond 45 yards. The accuracy he possesses in his kicks is probably not even in the top ten in the league but his range is so far beyond what we normally see that he is a game breaker. Shane Lechler also has that same ability to be a deciding factor in a game and with both of these guys on the roster it’s a shame neither can double as a QB from time to time.
Unfortunately, the highlight of the season was watching Janikowski knock through his 61-yard FG that really shows how devoid of great highlights the Raiders are. For now we won’t knock that distance though as it really is an accomplishment. With the anaemic offense the Raiders have, Janikowski highlights are set to come for four more years. The next step for re-signing is most likely Richard Seymour as he may not have been noticeable in the last half of the season but he still has the ability and the drive to anchor the defence for a while yet. Unlike the Patriots, the Raiders are in no position to get rid of quality vets and so hopefully they will be able to retain his services.
