Russians Double Up Czechs

Alex Ovechkin’s huge hit takes down the Czech Republic, as Evgeni Malkin scores twice en route to a 4-2 victory for Russia.

First off, if you didn’t see the hit, check it out:

I mean, the dude broke Jaromir Jagr’s visor. Alex Ovechkin has just as much scoring prowess as he does physicality, and that’s what makes him scary. He can hurt you on the score board and with his penchant for crushing Czechs. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

“I wish I had a concussion and just forget what happened, but I remember it,” said Jagr about the hit which led to a one time goal by Evgeni Malkin mere seconds after. Fedor Tyutin picked up the lose puck after the Ovechkin hit on Jagr, moved it up to Alexander Semin in the offensive zone who made a pretty pass to Malkin on the wing, who buried it behind Czech goalie Tomas Vokoun. Unlike the USA-Canada game, good goaltending would not be the difference maker.

The rematch of the 1998 gold medal game between Russia and the Czech Republic saw the Russians exacting their revenge. The Russians, coming off a loss to the Slovaks, needed a win in regulation to take their group, and they did just that.

Tomas Plekanec scored for the Czechs to tie the game on a 5 on 3 power play in the first period, with some nice stick handling to get past the Russian defense and beat Russian goalie, Evgeni Nabokov down low.

With the game 3-1, Russia in the third period, Milan Michalek scored for the Czechs to make it close, but Pavel Datsyuk’s empty-netter sealed the win late for team Russia, 4-2.

Former Florida Panther and Washington Capital, Victor Kozlov also scored for Russia in the second period.

Alex Ovechkin finished the game with 5 shots, 2 assist and was a +2. But the real stat was the one big hit out of 4 he had on the game. It was good to see him show up in this game, because he wasn’t much of a factor in the first two.

Off the loss the Czech team garnered the fifth spot in the standings and will play Latvia on Tuesday.
