Switzerland did everything possible to lose this game but somehow managed to hang on to beat Belarus 3-2 in a shootout.
Could you have possibly had a worse start if you were Switzerland? Inside the first minute of play Jonas Hiller had an absolute brain cramp and coughed up a routine cover up leading to Belarus scoring first and really set the tone for the rest of the game.
The entire game the Swiss team really looked like they had no confidence in Hiller and Jonas himself looked shaky at the best of times despite coming up with a couple really good third period stops. On the other hand Belarus played their game and Andrei Mezin gave them every chance to win the game.
The biggest reason Belarus lost was special teams. Switzerland scored twice on the PP and while Belarus did score one PP goal, they just for some reason refused to take some point shots with the exception of the goal they scored. And then Belarus shot themselves in the foot in overtime when they had a powerplay and managed only one shot that was no test for Hiller.
I'll be blunt. If the score wasn't close it would have been painful to sit through this one. Neither team really showed that they wanted to win the game, fortunately for Belarus Mezin was good again despite some sloppy rebound control.
Next ahead for the Swiss is a date with the USA. If Hiller can find his game Switzerland will have a chance to trap their way to a late win, as throughout the Olympics thier calling card has been keep it close and see what happens in OT or the shootout.
My three stars of the game.
1. Andrei Mezin – Played very well again.
2. Mark Streit – Was on the ice for what seemed like the entire game for Switzerland.
3. Hnat Domenichelli – Probably the best Swiss forward on both ends of the ice.
I'll take the USA in the Quarterfinal 3-1
Have a good one!
