Welcome to the world of political correctness. It's a world where everybody has to think twice about what they say on TV or the radio or in the written media. Two great examples of how out of control the PC Police have become are Tony Kornheiser and Mike Milbury.
Mike Milbury is under hot water for comments he made after the disappointing Russia-Canada hockey match where Canada blew out the Russian team. Milbury felt the same way as most of the viewers of the game, he felt disappointed with the Russian team's performance. Milbury let his feelings be known during the post game analysis for NBC.
Milbury's quote: “I was shocked that it was this onesided and I was really disappointed that these guys came with their, their, Eurotrash game.”
The PC Police were apparently watching. Several viewers were offended by his “Eurotrash” statement. Come on folks, is it really that bad? Milbury was not calling all of the European people trash, he's talking about a style of hockey play he doesn't agree with. The game in Europe has less checking and physicality and is geared more towards a finesse game. Milbury doesn't like this style of play, hey good for him. Now people are calling for him to be suspended. It's okay to disagree with Milbury, but a suspension is over the top.
Speaking of suspensions, ESPN suspended “Pardon the Interruption” host Tony Kornheiser for two weeks for comments he made on his radio show regarding ESPN host Hannah Storm.
Kornheiser's quote: “Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She's got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt, way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She's got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body.”
Okay, maybe the sausage casing is a little much, but consider the source. Kornheiser is a jester. He's making a joke. Hannah was a little offended and I'm sure Kornheiser apologized to her directly. During his public apology on his radio show, he called himself a “troll” and said he has no right to talk about someone's looks. That's where it should have ended. Hannah didn't ask for Kornheiser's suspension, but the PC Police struck again. ESPN suspended Kornheiser for two weeks for the comments. Did Ron Burgundy have to deal with this kind of backlash for the things he said on air? I think not. Stay classy San Diego.
Even the President of the United States got in trouble for calling Kanye West a “jackass”, actually one issue we can all agree with the President on.
No one can say what they feel anymore. Athletes now are coached on what to say to the media, and I don't blame them. We fault athletes for not giving us any quotes, but as soon as they do speak their mind, we turn their words around on them. Now look, I'm not talking about a knucklehead like Braves closer Johnny Rocker. His comments were racist and he deserved the back lash. Same goes for Rush Limbaugh when he made racist comments regarding Donovan McNabb. He deserved to get fired by ESPN.
I'm talking more about allowing people to express how they feel. Allow them to give their opinion. Allow them to entertain us. Mike Milbury and Tony Kornheiser are getting paid to entertain the public during a broadcast. And both are great at their jobs.
One show gets it. “Inside the NBA” on TNT is probably the best sports show on TV. The show is hosted by Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Sir Charles Barkley. It's a free form show where Charles and Kenny can say what they mean. It's a comedy show without the censors. I might disagree with something Barkley says, but at least he's polarizing. You can love him or hate him, but one thing can be sure, Barkley is making you laugh. Same can be said for Kenny Smith. The guy is just entertaining. Johnson's job is to act as the ring leader. He makes sure he rings in Barkley just enough. Fantastic show and it's refreshing to see on TV. Ron Burgundy would be proud.
