The Pens have continued bulking up for the playoffs as they acquired forward Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Toronto Maple Leafs for defenseman Martin Skoula and prospect Luca Caputi.
In Ponikarovsky the Penguins are getting a strong forward around the boards that can grind with the best of them. He currently sits with 19 goals and 22 assists in 61 games and is on pace to set a new career high in goals.
On a team that has struggled defensively, Poni was the lone forward on the Leafs to have a plus rating this season.
I hope this isn’t the guy they were thinking who could play with Malkin because although Poni is a quality forward, he is not what this team needs.
The big Ukrainian is known for having a great shot but is not the best finisher and with Malkin, you need a guy who can execute.
Ponikarovsky is in the final year of his contract that pays him $2.5 million and is slated to become an unrestricted free-agent this summer.
As mentioned in the Leopold trade, the Penguins have expendable defensemen’s so do not be surprised to see another one go on Trade Deadline day.
