Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the complete dismantling of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Despite the six game win streak, and despite just how good this team has played of late, the firesale is on in Carolina and we can expect to see ALOT of players moving out today. Jim Rutherford said he expects to see approximately 50% of the current roster at training camp next season which equates to roughly 10 players being traded. With Matt Cullen and Niclas Wallin gone, that leaves 6-8 more players on their way out. So who could it be?
Most Likely To Be Traded:
1) Ray Whitney- tons of rumours about Whitney right now, look for a high draft pick or prospect in return… (And watch for him to re-sign in the off-season)
2) Joe Corvo- Not too many rumours out there about this guy, but he’s proven he can be an effective #3-4 d-man… anywhere but Ottawa that is…
3) Scott Walker- Yes, he’s been hurt all year, and yes, he’s getting up there in age… but Scott Walker has shown he can still be a decently effective player. Exect a 3rd or 4th rounder for this guy.
4) Aaron Ward- Playing better hockey of late, Ward is an attractive opton for anyone who needs defensive depth and a guy who has won it all several times. Don’t expect much of a return though, his contract makes him slightly less attractive.
As for the rest of the team, it’s essentially a crapshoot as they’re all under contract for next season. While guys like Staal, C. Ward, Ruutu, Pitkanen, Jokinen etc. can be relatively sure they won’t be traded, essentially everybody else is waiting for (and dreading) that phone call.
Welcome to a heartwrenching and exciting day, Caniacs. This is gonna be one hell of a ride.
