What Can Go Wrong…

This game pretty much followed the same script as most Flames losses before the Olympic break. Tonight the Flames lost 4-0 to the Minnesota Wild, while once again out chancing, and out playing their opposition while making the opposition goaltender look like a Vezina candidate. But tonight there was a twist… The Flames gave up after two periods.

Calgary came out in the first period and pushed a good pace creating chances but unable to find the back of the net due to some hard luck from Eric Nystrom and Chris (I’m not sure which deity he pissed off) Higgins. Then there was one bad turnover at the opposition blue line which led to a two on one and bang it was 1-0.

Move ahead to the second period and more of the same. The Flames took the play to the Wild yet again and couldn’t find a way to sneak one past Backstrom. Now we follow that with a couple bad defensive plays leading to two odd man rushes and bang bang it’s now 3-0.

The third period I won’t talk much about since if the Flames can’t give a decent effort why should the blogger? Eh I’m kidding I’ll keep typing! Really it was a stale period and both teams were ready to just move on to the next game. However Chris Higgins needs an exorcist or something because he had a WIDE open net which he was about to put a wrister on the puck for an easy goal when his stick exploded. I feel for the guy because he has played hard since coming over from the Rangers.

As an overall on the night Miikka Kiprusoff did not play poorly at all, but couldn’t come up with a big save when his team needed it. Kipper will need to be better than adequate if the Flames expect to make the playoffs. Jarome Iginla was this years typical Iginla not skating hard and hoping his line mates could do the work for him and get him the puck. Don’t be fooled by his 5 goals in the Olympics. Three were against Norway and Two were against Germany and those goaltenders have never seen a snap shot like Jarome’s.

It will be VERY interesting to see who sits down Friday against the Devils. What I do know is Staios will be in the lineup. Who sits out is anyone’s guess. If I were coaching it would be Cory Sarich, with that being said I suspect that Adam Pardy will have a seat Friday. There are also three forwards that sat in the press box tonight that will all be dying to get into the lineup. Players beware. And finally the Saddledome staff have apparently installed new puck board at the rink because the pucks were flying off the back boards on missed shots. It led to a few chances for the Flames.

Have a good one!
