Flames Win! Flames Win!

OK. Maybe a little dramatic for a 5-3 win against the New Jersey Devils, but considering the way the Flames luck had been going it may be a good idea to celebrate while we can. Calgary got goals from five different guys tonight (except of course Chris Higgins who may never score a goal as a Flame) and points from 11 different guys (including Chris Higgins. Who may get a bunch of helpers as a Flame)
This game started off like most of the others with the Flames coming out guns a blazing with no success, then the Devils took over the second half of the 1st period with Zack Parise scoring with about 6 minutes left to go in the period. The newest addition to the team Steve Staios played with Jay Bouwmeester for most of the night and played well despite being -2. (Jay-Bo certainly didn’t help with one of the goals) He also made his presence felt early smashing Ilya Kovalchuk into the end boards early sending him to the locker room and made Ilya’s life miserable the whole night.
Onto the second period and the Flames caught the Devils with a hard working shift leading to an icing call and immediately following some hard work by Kotalik and Higgins, Chris Higgins threw a backhander that was stopped (obviously) by Marty Brodeur but Daymond Langkow picked up the rebound on his back hand and slid the rebound into a yawning cage to tie the game at one. A few minutes later and on a Devils PP Kovalchuk looked like a forward playing the point coughing up the puck to Curtis Glencross for a short handed breakaway. Curtis went roof and it’s 2-1. As the momentum continued to swing in Calgary’s favor Eric Nystrom pushed through to the net and banged home his own rebound to make it 3-1.
In the 3rd the Flames caught the Devils taking some chances and Matt Stajan and David Moss scored back to back 33 seconds apart to make it 5-1 and the game was pretty much over though the Devils caught Calgary napping late scoring two quick ones of their own from Parise and Kovalchuk to make it interesting and the game ended 5-3 Flames.
Notes from the Flames I would take away from this game are Kipper was average and that’s all he needed to be tonight as the offense finally showed up and showed what a bunch of 20 and 30 goal scorers can do if things go right. Iginla is still killing his line mates in my opinion and seems content to wait for someone to get him the puck rather than just taking it himself.
My three stars of the night (tonight I’m going to cheat a bit)
1. The Flames 4th line of Nystrom, Glencross, and Mayers. – May be the best 4th line in the NHL.
2. Mark Giordano was +3 with 20 minutes of ice time and a miserable bugger to play against.
3. Zach Parise – This guy is an animal, might be in the top 5 of best players in the league right now.
Next game for the Flames is Sunday afternoon in Minnesota against the Wild. It is a 1pm MST start time. They HAVE to win this game.
Have a good one!
