Malkin scores overtime winner against the Rangers

Jordan Leopold made his debut and was a witness to Evgeni Malkin scoring the overtime winner in Pittsburgh’s 5-4 win over the Rangers.

The Penguins outshot the Rangers 55-16, dominating the game from start to finish.

Marc-Andre Fleury started the game but did not finish it after giving up four goals on 10 shots, leaving his team trailing 4-2 in the second period.

His counterpart in Henrik Lundqvist was the opposite as the Penguins were throwing everything at him but could not tickle the twine.

Mike Rupp was able to cut the lead in half in the second when Sidney Crosby (who was booed by the New York faithful throughout the game) sent him in alone and he beat Lundqvist low-blocker to make the deficit 4-3.

Alex Goligoski tied the game up mid-way through the third when his shot from the goal-line extended went of a Rangers leg and into the net.

In overtime, Wade Redden took a hooking penalty, giving the Pens a 4-on-3 power-play with just over three minutes to go.

Evgeni Malkin ended the game with a slap-shot from just inside the blue line boosting the Pens over New Jersey for the Atlantic Division.

Although Alexei Ponikarovsky did not play due to immigration issues, Jordan Leopold was in the line-up and played a steady game.

He was second among Penguins defensemen in ice time with 21:11 and had an even rating. The 29-year-old was paired with former Golden Gophers teammate in Goligoski and looked comfortable.

Of course in time their pairing will become stronger and it will give the Pens three strong duos on D.

I am very curious to what Malkin’s line will be like once Ponikarovsky is eligible to play. Obviously Poni will be paired with Malkin but who is the other forward?

Personally I think Ruslan Fedotenko would be a good addition but Malkin has had success with Maxim Talbot so it should be interesting.

Fleury was not very good tonight so I am banking on he was just having one of those games. The Pens have now picked up two wins in a row and will try to make it three on Saturday against Dallas.
