The Minnesota Twins brass were hoping to meet with Joe Mauer’s agent Ron Shapiro this week in Fort Meyers, Florida. Shapiro’s visit could mean he’s just in town to meet with Mauer and other players he represents or to actually sit down and hammer out an extension for the Twins superstar catcher. No word whether they actually met or not but I’d say it’s a safe bet. The Twins say it’s a routine visit, but how could resigning one of the best and most popular Twins of all time be “routine”? Next to Kirby Pucket, Joe Mauer is probably the second most talented and most popular players the Twins have ever had.
Mauer is in the last year of a 4 year, $33 million deal. Mauer is playing it low key but at Twins fest in February he said he would prefer an earlier resolution to the negotiations. “I just don’t want the contract situation to be a distraction for what we’re trying to do as a team for 2010, Mauer said. “I just want to prepare for the season and hopefully not be the focus of everything. We’ve got a great lineup coming in”. In other words, sign me now so this doesn’t become a distraction!
The Minnesota Twins must sign Joe Mauer. Not only is he a local boy who wants to play his career for his hometown and his favorite team growing up. But he is a future Hall of Famer who has already broken some major batting records for catchers. He’s now won 3, count em’ 3, batting titles, 3 silver slugger awards, 2 Gold Glove awards and has been to the MLB All-Star game 3 times. Oh yeah, and he’s only 26!
The Twins not only need Mauer for his ability but they need him to be the face of the new Target Field which opens up next month just 5 days shy of Mauer’s 27th birthday. A new long term multi million dollar deal would be a nice birthday gift for Joe but would also be a nice gift to Minnesota Twins fans.
